Is the 'economic downturn' getting you down?

There are two questions to ask. Firstly, what is happening in your own country --how bad is it relative to other countries. Secondly, how about you personally? Is it getting you down? We all have 'little lives', jobs, hopes, plans for the future. Then we are also part of a bigger, social world. When you see a news piece about something happening to someone else, a factory closing, or a country defaulting --we usually kind of block this out. Maybe yawn and change the channel. It is not part of out 'little life'. But, nonetheless, it seems like just an endless stream of bad news. It's kind of getting me down.

I remember last year, when the 'downturn' hit, 'they' would come out and say, with smiles on their faces, 'oh we are emerging from it now... we can already see improvements!' But 'they' lied! Again!

So is anyone else here slowly turning away from all of the endless sources of entertainment and escapism, seeing what is really happening to us (the cattle) and starting to feel either dejected, or for the tougher ones --indignant (but cut off, alone and powerless --nonetheless).

I know this is a bummer of a topic. But hey, it's just one thread.

...

I'd say it's gotten me down.
I am thankful though, I still have a job, but it is very stressful because of the economy. Many, many customer have gone out of business. 2 neighbors have lost their jobs over a year ago and can't find work.
I'm a bit afraid of the future. I have a very good job, a very tiny home with no wife or kids, a little mortgage left, so I pay so much in taxes that I barely make ends meet. With all that's going on, I will end up paying more taxes, so how will I survive? Obviously a lot of people need help, and I don't know what the answer is. I feel as though I'm overburdened.

I really feel sorry for people like you. You come out of school looking for a job that already has 100's of people applying for it, and several with experience. It's going to be tough to find work. Not to mention those applying for some jobs are so over qualified.

I have my own small business. Not a positive starting point under the recent circumstances. I can feel the recession every day. And in no way there is light shining at the horizon. So I do not believe in an economic improvement at the moment. But I don’t let it interfere with my mind. I am still the positive guy I used to be. Happiness is a feeling, something between your ears. I accept life as it comes. But I am 64, so worries about a working carrier are not really current. For youngsters things are different. My daughter got recently her academic degree in biology. For her it is difficult to find a decent job. And that is sad. Our society should offer young people prospects. But it doesn’t. I feel ashamed about that, because it is my generation that organized this situation. Greed and money are the main reasons. The generation of my parents was characterized by modesty and social behaviour. Properties, that seems to have disappeared in my generation. An income that equals the income of 50 to 500 normal working people seems to be normal and ethically accepted. A society can not bear that burden. While fossil fuels scarce we travel all over the world for holidays or fun shopping in Rome or New York. We make money with money. Money has become the main target. And mainly “non rooted money”, money that comes from elsewhere. Investors are interested in interest; not in social consequences. When they can earn elsewhere more money, they are gone, leaving you in a destroyed local economic structure.
We Dutch were masters in this discipline. When we discovered New Guinea we found out that the natives had shells as money. Shells were not to find in the inland, so they had a rather secure trading value. When the Dutch arrived they first loaded chests full with shells at the beach, so they had “trade money”. The natives were happy with their Dutch visitors. They never had so much money as after trading with the Dutch. They did not understand that the “value” of all the shells had disappeared and destroyed their local economic structure.
In a way my generation behaved as the natives of New Guinea. We embraced the “non rooted money” as a gift from heaven. Thinking we became rich, as never before. Now we know better.
As I said I feel ashamed about that. My next generation deserved a better start.

I've all but quit watching/listening to news. The TV goes to Cartoon Network, TV-Land, public broadcasting (especially mysteries)...anything but current events or "reality" shows. Two weeks ago my mother, who worked in the same office as I do, was part of a "workforce reduction." That's the fifth one my employer's had in 18 months. Mom is 64...too old for most people to consider hiring (if there was any hiring going on), and just a tad too young for full Social Security. My dad hasn't worked in two years because of the housing slump. I wish I could help them like they've helped me in the past. They're getting by on unemployment, dad's partial Social Security...and hope.

Last year my company instituted mandatory furloughs - 10% hour & wage cut. Two weeks ago, they announced a pay freeze. Oh yeah, guess who was up for review and raise this month? :wave: The Hope for Homeowners scheme is a sham. {Don't get me started on that!}

We, the People, should boot all the politicians out, string up the CEO's by their "golden parachute" strings and take over general operations for a year. We've done so much, for so long, with so little that we are now capable of doing anything with nothing.

I learned two years ago, that unfortunately, out whole western monetary system is for sure going down, and there is nothing, that can stop it. It will be worldwide. "They" can only kick down the can by loading all the banksters bad debts onto the shoulders of the public. The reason is (in short), that our monetary system is a debt based system, where money is created out of loans by private banks. Because of compounding interest, the system needs a reset every 60-80 years. Its difficult to explain, but I REALLY encourage everyone to watch the "Crash Course" presentation by Dr. Chris Martenson, then you understand what is the disease, and what are the symptoms (no conspiracy theory!)
http://anonym.to/?http://www.chrismartenson.com/crashcourse
Its funny to post this in a gay porn forum, but it really helped me to understand and accept this situation. My own situation is, that I still have a good job in the computergames industry, but what will happen, when peoples have no more money for that? I was never in a consumerist livestyle, so luckily im not in debt. The coming downfall encouraged me to live healthier, because public healthcare will probably be away some day. Here in Germany, young peoples like me always knew, that we will get almost nothing out of our public retirement anyway, because of the aging population.
There are only few peoples i talked to about this topic, because not everyone likes to hear, that things will not always be better in the future. Luckily my parents, my boyfriend and my closest friends listen to my views and are aware.
This is the next, VERY IMPORTANT thing: Dont be isolated in hard times. Build a community and have friends and family around you that trust you and that you can trust.
One nice thing, that happened to me is, that I and my ey-boyfriend started to grow vegetables and fruit in a small urban garden. This is really fun, and healthy and a great experience!
My fear is, that ordinary peoples will freak out, and there will be more hatred against minorities like gays or jews, my hope is (actually im sure) that better times will come after all debts (and money) have been wiped out. Hopefully there will be more sustainability, community and less materialism. All the best, for you all!

At the moment I'm quiet happy that I left the crowd of the unemployed.
I can't be sure if it realy was the crisis that let me loose my last job, but the field staff wrote less contracts, so the in staff didn't have much to do, so... I guess it was the crisis.
I think the biggest problem of my country at the moment is our government. They are messing all up.
If we really keep them for the next 3 years, Germany has a really big problem.

Instinctively everybody has an idea about the financial position of other people. Is your feeling right or wrong? How easy or difficult is it for people to exist? How fair are the recourses divided?
By accident I found on the internet some statistics about the income of politicians, sportsmen etc.
I am not a great fan of statistics. Numbers can easily fool you. But sometimes they help to get at least any picture. I give no comment. It’s up to you to judge what is decent or not. Politicians have public functions, so their income is in a way public matter. By the rest I removed the names.

I start with the income of common people in The Netherlands:

“The average Dutchman” (modaal inkomen) Gross income (family, adults> 23 years):
prognosis for 2011: Year € 33.000,00; Day € 90,41
(Taxes 32%)

The minimum Gross income (family, adults > 23 years) in The Netherlands:
prognosis for 2011: Year € 16.891,12; Day € 46,28
(Taxes 20%)

AOW (pension) 2010:
the regulatory is a bit complex; this is an approach
single person >65 years Gross income: Year € 12.626,76; Day € 34,59
couple, both >65 years (the income is per person): Year € 8.794,08; Day € 24,09

-0-
Every adult has to pay health care insurance Year > € 1.030,00; Day > € 2,82

The average rent for houses was in 2009 € 811,00 per month, Day € 27,03
But there are cheap houses for about € 360,00 per month, Day > € 12,00

Costs Gas, Water and Electricity € 120,00 per month for a very small house,
up to € 400,00 for big houses, so Day > € 4,00

Then there is further sewer tax and garbage costs Day > € 1,37

And finally insurance costs Day > € 0,41

Total Day > € 20,60

So at the end for a single retired person there is less than € 14,00 per day for food, clothes, newspaper, telephone bill, internet costs etc. (a car is of course out of the question)
-0-
The Netherlands are considered to be a rich and social country.
-0-

And now the income for a bit more fortunate people:
(Jaar = Year and Dag = Day)

Politicians
Jan Peter Balkenende - Minister-President Nederland Jaar: € 176.000,00; Dag: € 704,00
David Cameron - Premier Groot Brittanie Jaar: € 238.180,00; Dag: € 953,00
Barack Obama - President VS Jaar: € 4.587.924,00; Dag: € 18.352,00
Angela Merkel – Bondskanselier Jaar: € 220.000,00; Dag: € 880,00
Nicolas Sarkozy - President Frankrijk Jaar: € 253.600,00; Dag: € 1.014,00
Geert Wilders - Lid Tweede Kamer voor de PVV Jaar: € 94.757,00; Dag: € 379,00
Herman van Rompuy - Voorzitter van de Europese Raad Jaar: € 385.542,00; Dag: € 1.542,00

Robert Mugabe - President Zimbabwe Jaar: € 17.333,00; Dag: € 69,00
Gordon Brown - Gepensioneerd Minister-President UK Jaar: € 228.553,00; Dag: € 914,00
Yves Leterme - Premier België Jaar: € 200.000,00; Dag: € 800,00

José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero - Premier van Spanje Jaar: € 91.982,00; Dag: € 368,00

Sports:
The average Dutch Football player (national team) €Year 4.000.000,00; Day € 16.000,00

5. Jaar: € 18.000.000,00; Dag: € 72.000,00

CEO’s
Not really traceable, varies from: Year € 40.000.000,00 to Year €1,00 (probably Tax involved)

I feel okay. I do keep those in mind who are going without as some of my fellow graduates are. I guess it's brought me down to earth a bit, but I guess it could always be worse.

This is a good place to insert one of my favorite quotes:

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.
Thomas Jefferson, (Attributed)
3rd president of US (1743 - 1826)
