I noticed when other users on my PC login to their separate user account and open JDownloader they can see the list of files I've setup to download. I couldn't find a setting to change this and want my files to only be seen if signed on under my user ID. Most programs treat each user as separate so I'm surprised JD does this.

Anyone know the setting I need to check in JD? Thanks :)

Hello, cg1x,

I searched for such a function, but there isn't.

As a workaround, you could manually save your current link list (with password protection) and delete the list in JD each time you exit the program.

Thank you

Appreciate the replies. I thought maybe it was just my setup but it appears this is normal with JD if you guys are seeing the same thing.

If this is a really big deal, and you have a computer with at least 4GB of RAM, you could run jdownloader inside a virtual machine using something like the free VirtualBox virtualisation app from Oracle.

Yes, it's over-kill, but if this is important, overkill may be acceptable.

If security is a concern, I vigorously second gb2000ie's recommendation of using a virtual machine. Not only does that secure Jdownloader, but it also keeps any and all settings of every program private and it guarantees that no matter what sites you visit, you cannot infect your main computer with a virus. (Because any damage is limited to the virtual machine which you can always just blow away.)

The whole idea behind using a virtual machine is that you run the Operating System of your choice (the guest OS) on your current Mac or PC (which is the host OS). This way you can start up what is essentially another computer in a window on your current physical computer. And, just like in Las Vegas, everything that you do on your virtual machine, stays on the virtual machine. It's like having a condom for your computer!

I have used Oracle's VirtualBox to run Ubuntu - it is real easy to set up, all the software is free, and since the client is Linux you have eliminated any risk from Windows viruses and hacks.

If you have Windows 7 Premium or Enterprise you can download from Microsoft Windows 7 Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode. Windows XP Mode is essentially a pre-built Windows XP machine ready to run inside your Windows 7 computer. So you just download it and use it - there's nothing to configure.

Windows 7 Virtual PC lets you run any Microsoft operating system as a client (i.e. an application) on your Windows 7 computer. I've got several variations of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 98, and even (gasp!) MS-DOS virtual machines from which to choose. (My software library - like my record library - goes back a long time!)

So, yeah, play safely - give yourself a virtual sandbox where no one can get hurt.

(However if you get an email asking for your Facebook or PayPal password and you click on the link and give it up, then you are on your own. Technology can't protect people from their own stupidity.)

This is really off-topic but I understood that that the maximum usable RAM in XP was only 2.7GB regardless of however much you physically have. Is this correct?

Squiggle, with pysical address extension (PAE) you can use more memory. My Windows XP reports 3.37 GB main memory in control panel->system. PAE is enabled by Service Pack 2 if the CPU supports it.

The problem is that Windows XP is a 32bit OS. There is also a 64bit build but I think it is not available for home users.

The same limitations apply if you use 32bit Windows 7.

Ah - as ton has said, Windos XP is a 32bit OS, so it's probably not the best choice to host another Windows VM, but Linux will happily run with just 500MB of RAM, so you could take TopDog's advice and use a Linux VM if you have about 1.5-2GB of RAM on your XP machine.

Windows XP is very old and very insecure technology. It's a decade old, and it really is time for it to die! I'd suggest that you might want to consider a new computer in your future some time in the next year or so.

Good luck!
