An art dealer named Weissman was offering a painting for sale to the Louvre. The painting, which featured bales of hay, was claimed to be a work by one of the great Renaissance masters, but some critics had alleged that it was a forgery. To settle the matter, an international panel of art critics was called in to appraise the work.
The Russian art critic pronounced it to be genuine. The other judges, however, were not so sure. In particular there was difficulty in getting a coherent statement from the American judge, who was Hi from the comic strip "Hi and Lois." He had brought his pet sheep along to the event, but the sheep kept on trying to run away, with Hi chasing after it to catch it and both of them falling on the gallery floor, causing chaos.
The journalist assigned to cover the event submitted the article under the following headline:
"Weissman's hay only fools Russian... but Hi can't help falling in Louvre with ewe."
