The very best art-joke ever! Bravo!:rofl::rofl:

But if you want the darkest, most violent "joke" ever in a spectacular oil painting you go for Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio "David and Goliath" in the 1606 version. Caravaggio had just recently murdered a guy and the head of Goliath in this version of the painting was Caravaggio's own.

Caravaggio (1571-1606) was a very violent and dark person - but goddamn what a painter!!!

His career as a painter took off in the 1590's in Rome, but he was born in the small village of Caravaggio outside Milan - all his male relatives died in a violent plague epidemy in the 1570's.

Rome at the turn of the century 1600 was a very violent city - some historians have argued that Rome 1600 was a more violent and dangerous city than Chicago in the 1920's - Al Capone's Chicago. You could say that Caravaggio was certainly of his time...

But damn what a painter - and I've actually engaged in thoughts about making a Caravaggio-thread on GH sometime. ;)

Talent does not preclude violence and villainy. You might enjoy François Villon’s dinner conversation but keep your eyes on the cutlery.

Hrrmmm...I was wrong about the version. The version of "David with the head of Goliath" I'm thinking about is the 1609-10 version, not long before Caravaggio's own death in 1610.
