As we’ve been watching the conflict in Libya play out exactly like the war in Iraq, and being keen to their tricks and tactics, we began examining pictures, videos and other evidence to lead us to the conclusion that this entire ordeal is a CIA-backed coup.

I've heard of hyperbole and racing to conclusions - but this takes the biscuit!

Someone put a wrong caption on a picture - clearly it's a massive UN conspiracy and a US-led coup. Logic and rationality seem to elude these people!

It's not unknown for humans to make mistakes. Reuters are a group of humans. They make mistakes. Big ones at times. Publishing the photoshopped Iranian rocket launch pics being a good recent example. To leap to profound conclusions based on something so simple and trivial is insane.

Here's some maxims that I think are immensely relevant to this kind of tinfoil-hat nonsense:

"Never attribute to malice that which can be easily explained by incompetence"

"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof"

This is very extraordinary claim, with extraordinarily little to back it up.

I really hope this is a parody site like the Onion, because it sure reads like it - all that breathless hyper-ventilating and insane extrapolation - it's either hilarious or tragic.

I think that the site mentioned is off the wall, and could either be a parody of news (in which case it's funny in an way) or it might be a conspiracy theory site (in which case it's stupid, tragic, and senseless).

I go with at least one of the quotes Bart supplied in his post in this thread:

This is very extraordinary claim, with extraordinarily little to back it up.

It seems clear to me that the Libyan resistance movement is real, and they don't want the US/NATO/CIA involved in their democratic revolution. So I think whatever we can do to keep the US from attacking Libya and co-opting the process, the better. We don't need a conspiracy theory for that, or to join the side of Quadaffi; who the international community was having a fine time dealing with up until now.
