That has happened to me. Even with my first crush when I was 14 or 15. I remember he made some stuff that made me think he was into me as well as I was into him but since we lost touch now I will keep on wondering..
My advice is to try and approach it, you don't need to tell him directly, just find out what he thinks about gay guys is a good start. Then you can come out little by little to him. Deny it a couple of times but keep his doubt open and see how he reacts.
