McAfee Site Advisor is now labeling all MediaFire downloads as "potentially dangerous" but don't give precise details. Can anyone throw any more light on this? My own security software (ESET Smart Security) says their downloads are completely clean.

I would imagine that files sent by MF can't be properly checked by McAfee before download, and therefore it labels all as potentially dangerous. Therefore you won't be getting proper protection when you attempt to download them.

Your best bet is to keep your wits about you when choosing which files to download and/or switch to an AV that actually works (I don't think much of McAfee at all!). For example AVG Free Edition. It works pretty well (especially since it's free) and doesn't give the same problem as far as I'm aware. Link: http://anonym.to/?http://free.avg.com/gb-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free

Thanks, Squallmuzza. I'm only using the site advisor part of McAfee. My standard AV is ESET & nothing dangerous has got past it in the 3 years I've had it. So far it's given MediaFire downloads the all-clear so I assume this is a false alarm, or is given by McAfee for supposed copyright reasons.

Oh well if you have ESET then you're set. If you have the Smart Security unit of that, you don't need the use the McAfee site adviser anyway. It does essentially the same job.

McAfee and Symantec products always conflict in different ways with the better value free utilities. McAfee especially does not like other products and will produce false reports--even if you only use a portion of the suite. If you are going to use McAfee, you need to use all McAfee and uninstall other products.

I have just found that the cost involved with McAfee subscription services isn't warranted...Lord help you if you let your subscription or trial expire and try to uninstall. It is very difficult to remove due to a number of Registry entries. Use CC Cleaner or similar non-MS uninstall program that will clean the Registry as well.

Just a thought.
