My monitor goes black after I split video

I just starting using as powered video splitter 350mhz to send a signal to my tv monitor and my computer monitor. Everything was fine at first, nice video on both monitors but when I left the house for a few hours and came back my monitor would not display.

I had to unplug the splitter, plug the monitor directly into the VGA female outlet in order to get the computer's monitor working again. Both my monitor and computer are a few years old and neither has HDMI. My TV monitor is HD and I do use an adapter to connect VGA to HDMI and it works fine.

Any help would be appreciated.

A splitter is unlikely to give a good experience on a computer. The relationship between the graphics cards in computers and monitors is not passive.

There is a handshake, where the computer's graphics card asks the monitor what it is and what it can do. The computer assumes it has one monitor on the end of each video out. If you jam a splitter into the mix, the two monitors will both answer and interfere with each other, resulting in the computer receiving absolute garbage.

When you installed the splitter the computer was probably already on, so the graphics card had done it's handshake. You then left, and the computer, or the monitors, went to sleep. When you tried to wake them up, the computer did a fresh handshake, and got back total garbage, so it could not initialise the screens, hence them being black.

Once you take the splitter out, the handshake will work again.

Bottom line - your appoach is flawed, and going to give you nothing but inconsistent and infuriating outcomes.

If you want two screens, you need either two graphics cards, or one graphics card designed to services two simultaneous output streams. Your OS will then see two screens, and you can choose to extend your desktop over both screens, or, mirror the same single desktop onto both.
