National Coming Out Day
Today is National Coming Out Day in the US, Ireland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. It is a time to think about our place in the world, the people who came before us who struggled under severe homophobic prejudice, and the young people who will come after us and the world we want to leave them.
The best way to do your part to combat prejudice is to be visible as a gay person to the community you interact with. That is what changes minds more permanently and powerfully than anything else. That's because prejudice is based on the fiction that people who are "different" are bad, and the more they know us personally, the harder it is to keep that myth going.
Can you challenge yourself to be more visible this week?
Of course, your safety is top priority. I realize that many LGBT people live in fear for their lives and jobs in some places. Stay physically safe.
But even then, beware of isolation - that feeling of being trapped has killed so many beautiful innocent people. If you can find one friend to tell, then you are much less alone. Or just tell us here - we would love to hear about who you are.
