I watched the premiere of a pilot for a new TV series on FOX tonight - "Virtuality" - created by the same guys that brought us BattleStar Galactica. I had always hoped that BSG would include a gay couple but that never happened.

This time around Ronald Moore DID include us in his production. The couple are Manny and Val - the Latino and Russian members of the crew of an expedition through space to a nearby solar system in search of a new home for mankind (sound familiar, lol).

In the opener it is learned that the entire expedition is being broadcast on TV - FOX TV at that - back on earth - sorta like "Big Brother In Space". Manny and Val are first seen having a dispute in the galley as they prepare a meal for the crew. The next time you see them they are cuddled together in the confessional giving their audience back on earth an idea of what life is like aboard the Phaeton (the name of their space vessel). Soon after there are a number of times they remark how much they love each other or state "The fearless gay duo are ready captain" etc. You get the idea.

Now, Manny is the softer of the two however he is by no means effeminate. Val on the other hand is a strong, virile Russian stud who tells one of the women on board "I don't like women either" after she had an argument and said "I don't like women, ugh". I got a laugh out of that one.

The 2 hour pilot was really something with great special effects, interesting dialogue and then the added bonus of a respectable gay couple living and working side by side with the heterosexual couples and singles among the crew.

If you missed it you should kick yourself and try to catch it on the re-run. I am not sure when the series will return in earnest but I imagine this fall. Watch for it and support Ronald Moore for supporting us and presenting us in such a heroic way. Tell all your friends, too. This show needs more viewers to be able to compete.

I hope this post is helpful and informative.

Here is a photo of the group. The gay couple are on the right - Manny has on a lavender shirt and Val is the hunk seated on his right

Never trust IMDb-reviews. Just take a look into their forums and you see the brain power behind the people who write those reviews.

Give it a chance

If you read the first post in this thread you would see that this was a "PILOT" - as in a test run to see if there is an audience, the same way BSG had a pilot a year before the series began to play.

As for IMDB saying it "just went off" that is the nature of a pilot - to create a cliffhanger to leave the audience wanting more. If this were intended to be a 2-hour made for TV movie I would have said a 2-hour made for TV movie instead of a PILOT for a SERIES.

This PILOT blends sci-fi with a reality-tv show. As in all series, there is an element of "soap-opera" drama to humanize the characters. This time there is a GAY COUPLE who are portrayed in a non-stereotypical fashion. That fact alone warrants ALL gay people to give this show a chance.

IMDB dissaproves of many, many films that I find to be enjoyable. IMDB caters to the very "LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR" of viewers. If something isn't going to appeal to the widest possible audience then they snub it. I don't put any faith in any review I find at IMDB and I recommend everyone else (with an ounce of desire to make up their own minds about something) do the same.

It is improbable that this show will be picked up at all because it doesn't cast the gay couple as either drug addicts, child molesters, sissy-boys, over the top muscle daddies or just plain evil. In my experience society requires that all gay role models be portrayed in an ill light. Maybe, just maybe this show "Virtuality" is a step toward a new era where gay people are portrayed as normal, well adjusted, decent, hard working, generous, kind, loving and well respected members of society.

Please try to watch it and get as many other gay people as possible to do the same.

SPREAD THE WORD

I Wish, LOL

Hey jockey, were you part of a test group? looking at the pilot?

Nah Thor,

If I had been I probably would have stood up and cheered, LOL.

After posting this thread I googled "Virtuality" and came up with some interesting facts. There is a web campaign to encourage FOX to pick up the show for at least one season. Apparently, there is a facebook page dedicated to the campaign. I plan to visit and vote for the show. I hope others will, too.

I added a photo to the initial post in this thread. Check it out. I would include a link for the campaign but I would not be so bold as to upset the powers that be, LOL.

Thanks for adding to the thread, buddy. I'll take any attention I can get.

Hope you spread the word,

jl2

I just watched it with my boyfriend and we both LOVED it. It's an impressive pilot, even more impressive when you keep in mind that there are twelve characters (or actually even thirteen) to introduce and after ninety minutes I have a distinct feeling I know how they all tick. Having written pilots myself I can only say, nothing is harder to write and this one is exceptional.
I loved the handling of the gay couple but I loved the handling of the female characters and their issues even more.
With the exception of Firefly, I normally don't watch shows in space (I was bored by Battlestar) but this one has me hooked.

Too bad its chances to get picked up for a series are slim to none :(

Thanks for adding to the thread, pump. I would laugh at your comment - if I knew what you were referring to, lol. I didn't get the connection to the gay animal planet with the subject of this thread. If you could explain a little then maybe I might get the joke too.

He meant a "gay fox" show (as in: the animal), not the gay FOX show (as in: the network).
