I watched the premiere of a pilot for a new TV series on FOX tonight - "Virtuality" - created by the same guys that brought us BattleStar Galactica. I had always hoped that BSG would include a gay couple but that never happened.
This time around Ronald Moore DID include us in his production. The couple are Manny and Val - the Latino and Russian members of the crew of an expedition through space to a nearby solar system in search of a new home for mankind (sound familiar, lol).
In the opener it is learned that the entire expedition is being broadcast on TV - FOX TV at that - back on earth - sorta like "Big Brother In Space". Manny and Val are first seen having a dispute in the galley as they prepare a meal for the crew. The next time you see them they are cuddled together in the confessional giving their audience back on earth an idea of what life is like aboard the Phaeton (the name of their space vessel). Soon after there are a number of times they remark how much they love each other or state "The fearless gay duo are ready captain" etc. You get the idea.
Now, Manny is the softer of the two however he is by no means effeminate. Val on the other hand is a strong, virile Russian stud who tells one of the women on board "I don't like women either" after she had an argument and said "I don't like women, ugh". I got a laugh out of that one.
The 2 hour pilot was really something with great special effects, interesting dialogue and then the added bonus of a respectable gay couple living and working side by side with the heterosexual couples and singles among the crew.
If you missed it you should kick yourself and try to catch it on the re-run. I am not sure when the series will return in earnest but I imagine this fall. Watch for it and support Ronald Moore for supporting us and presenting us in such a heroic way. Tell all your friends, too. This show needs more viewers to be able to compete.
I hope this post is helpful and informative.
