Cabot's magnum opus...
"The Big Bang Pistol Set"

These fully functional .45 auto 1911 pistols are made entirely from the 4.5 billion year old Gibeon meteorite.

Each piece carved out of a single 77 pound chunk of the meteorite...

Right and left hand specific, each pistol is a mirror image of the other. Even the twist of the rifling in the barrels is hand specific, with a left hand twist for the left, and right twist for the right...

Cost $4,500,000.00

Sardonyx Hercules Cameo

5815.jpg

This sardonyx cameo depicts a man in profile looking to the left. Perhaps, he is Hercules. Skilful Roman cameo-carvers exploited the tonal contrast of some stones. This could be a simple two-tone contrast or a more subtle variation using all available gradations of shade. Sardonyx was particularly valued as a cameo stone. From the Townley Collection. Roman, 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. (The British Museum, London).

Winston’s post of the Roman sardonyx above reminded me of the really famous one among the Marlborough gems collection.

It’s a black stone jewel intaglio with the image of Antinous that was signed by Antoninianus of Aphrodisia, who also sculpted the Lanuvium relief now kept in Rome, the only artist known to have signed his name on his work and we have two of his pieces.

It was proposed by Marguerite Yourcenar (in her Memoires of Hadrian, 1951) that what is known now as the Marlborough Sardonix after the British house of Marlborough who owned the original until 1899, was once might have belonged to Hadrian himself.

Modern glass copy by James Tassie of the Antinous Marlborough Gem that captures the spirit of the original.

A plaster cast of the original.
