Read this on the BBC News website the other day. Maybe THAT is why I feel so low all the time!!!

People living alone 'are more depressed'

People of working age who live alone increase their risk of depression by up to 80% compared with people living in families, says a Finnish study.

It says the main factors are poor housing conditions for women and a lack of social support for men, who are both equally affected.

The study tracked the use of anti-depressants in 3,500 Finnish people.

A mental health charity said people who lived alone must be given outlets to talk about their problems.

The study authors highlight the fact that the proportion of one-person households in Western countries has increased during the past three decades, with one in every three people in the US and the UK living alone.

The participants in the study, published in BioMed Central's public health journal, were working-age Finns; 1,695 were men and 1,776 were women, and they had an average age of 44.6 years.

They were surveyed in 2000 and asked whether they lived alone or with other people.

Other information about their lifestyle was gathered, such as social support, work climate, education, income, employment status and housing conditions, in addition to details on smoking habits, alcohol use and activity levels.

Researchers found that people living alone bought 80% more anti-depressants during the follow-up period, between 2000 and 2008, than those who did not live alone.

Dr Laura Pulkki-Raback, who led the research at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, said the real risk of mental health problems in people living alone could be much higher.

"This kind of study usually underestimates risk because the people who are at the most risk tend to be the people who are least likely to complete the follow up. We were also not able to judge how common untreated depression was."
Isolation

Researchers said that living with other people could offer emotional support and feelings of social integration, as well as other factors that protect against mental health problems.

Living alone, the study said, could be linked with feelings of isolation and a lack of social integration and trust, which are risk factors for mental health.

The study said all the factors involved needed to be addressed in order to understand and reduce depression in working-age people.

Beth Murphy, head of information at mental health charity Mind, said the rise in the number of people living alone had had a clear impact on the nation's mental health.

"Loneliness and isolation results in people having fewer outlets to talk about how they are feeling, which is something that we know can really help to manage and recover from a mental health problem.

"It is therefore essential that people who live alone are given the most appropriate treatment such as talking therapies, which provide safe, supportive environments to discuss and work through problems, rather than simply being left to rely solely on antidepressants."

Well I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the survey but I am always a little suspicous of these things since a friend of mine was studying statistics at college and showed me some of his course literature. They used 2 graphs to demonstrate the problems with assessing data. I couldn't find the exact plots but trawled the net and found these:

Here is a graph showing the link between the amount of animal fats consumed and the death rate from intestinal/colonic cancer

Or is colonic cancer due to increased telephone ownership???

Correlation is not causation - always always always be wary of this kind of pop-science.

B.

Indeed. If A causes B, and A also causes C, then B and C are correlated.

Statistics like the telephone example above do not demonstrate casative relation, only correlation - and statisticians are fully aware of this fact. Correlation is useful information. It MAY indicate that one is causing the other, or it may mean the two have a common cause, which might give a clue as to what that cause is.

It would be most unlikely that increased occurrence of intestinal cancer was caused by increasing telephone ownership, but it would not surprise me in the least to learn that the two are correlated. The most likely explanation is that people in wealthier countries are more likely to have a telephone, and also tend to consume more animal fats. The next step in the study would be to test that theory by comparing populations in the same country and similar socio-economic status show any differences - i.e. are people in Finland who consume animal fat more likely to get intestinal cancer than people in Finland who don't consume it?

---------------------------

As for the data about depression - well, you could knock me down with a feather. I don't know that I've seen any published figures, but it's been known for years than people living alone are more likely to get depressed.

IMO it totally depends on who the person is; I'm sure there is some statistical relationship, because personality types can be quantified.

I lived alone for 15 years and was perfectly happy. Then I met my partner & I've lived with someone for 30 years. I can't predict what would happen if he suddenly were no longer with me. Would I be happy alone as I was before? Or would I miss him so much that I would be miserable? My guess is that I'd be somewhere in between.

I think it matters how old you are. I think older people are less happy being alone that younger ones, for various reasons; but that's purely an opinion.

Well the culture here in Finland is what it is. We anyways have a very high suicide rates etc. even though we are often called country with best education system etc. And I think it depends lot about person himself. And I don't believe in that 80% part. They tracked antidepressant users and looked who lives alone and did the math. Maybe my opinnion is what it is because I can't atm imagine living with anyone:p

I think the most important thing is the attitude to life.

Well I think you need to be occupied well that you don't come on thoughts of suicide etc. and as long as you are interested in different things you can be happy and there is really no need for bad thoughts.

Of course everybody has good/bad days. I think you just never may loose your general interest.

Statistics are very useful for for technical applications. In determining sample size for quality control, or safety calculations. But the science of big numbers can cause a lot of confusion.
My knowledge about depressions is limited. I never felt depressed. I was married for twenty years. My wife suffered of depressions. She divorced to achieve a new life, a better life with new opportunities. She got a new life, but still is depressed. She is a regular visitor of psychiatrists and takes medicine, but nothing helps. I feel sorry for her.
A while ago I saw an interesting statement:
Some people push all their life against the door of happiness without understanding that it opens inside.

don't be stupid:( understanding anything about a person is subjective for you and them!!and in that creates the misunderstanding:(

.... or that university-controlled studies have shown that people wearing white coats tend to make more scientific discoveries than people in "civvies".
The moral: If you want to make an important discovery, wear a white coat!

to Slimjim: your graph is bit old I think. Czechoslovakia doesn't exist from 1st Jan 1993.

Well, that's hardly relevant to the point that Slimjim was making in his post - the graph was an illustrative example.
