What's a "pet peeve," you ask? Wikipedia (that all-knowing, oft-quoted and sometimes accurate source of information) defines it this way:

A pet peeve is a minor annoyance that an individual identifies as particularly annoying to them, to a greater degree than others may find it.

So, we all have 'em. They're not usually something that makes us angry, they just irritate us every time we encounter them.

My own biggest pet peeve has to be spelling errors in newspapers and magazines. Okay, the grammar often leaves something to be desired, too, but it's the spelling that really gets under my skin. I mean, seriously, can't they find the "spellcheck" icon on the toolbar or what?

Anyway, there, I got that off my chest.

And...what's your pet peeve?

When people feel the need to question every little thing that you do.

Did you really need to post that?

Anyway, another pet peeve of mine is when people don't take (the rules of) games seriously. I'm not that competitive or anything but it always annoys me when people take advantage of the fun atmosphere to bend a few of the rules, especially if there is a score involved. :p

Spitting in the streets.
In many many countries it seems to be an accepted behavior.

Modern language.

- this is a bit difficult for me; I have to translate my Dutch situation into English; but I will give it a try -

Politics, Media and society in The Netherlands tend to use words which have no roots in my language. Mostly those words have a scientific origin. They are essential for their discussions, but are not to understand for outsiders, so common people like me (in Dutch we use: Jan met de pet – John with the cap – in contrast to important people, who wear a hat). This makes these words unsuitable for common use. Yet they are used on a large scale, thereby often by people who have no proper idea of the meaning. The reader or listener feels shame to admit not to understand the meaning and, what even is worse, he starts to use those words. There was a wonderful TV-series about this subject: Keeping up appearances.

Problems arise when organizations communicate in this way with common people.

An example (found on the net):

"Investigators at the contractor will review the facts in your case and decide the most appropriate course of action. The first step taken with most Medicare health care providers is to reeducate them about Medicare regulations and policies. If the practice continues, the contractor may conduct special audits of the providers medical records. Often, the contractor recovers overpayments to health care providers this way. If there is sufficient evidence to show that the provider is consistently violating Medicare policies, the contractor will document the violations and ask the Office of the Inspector General to prosecute the case. This can lead to expulsion from the Medicare program, civil monetary penalties, and imprisonment."

Translation: We will take two steps to look at this matter: We will find out if it was an error or fraud. We will let you know the result.

And another (I did this one myself):

The quantitative evaluation of the effectiveness of partial regression to prevent insubordination at the administrative level asks for legislation and rapid implementation.

Well, clear language I would say.

Tjerk12, you hate jargon, in other words.

Must admit that your answer is good and funny. But obviously I was not able to make my point. Jargon is fine as long as it is used for its purpose, communication between people who are able to understand the words. I use jargon when I talk to professional colleagues. It is the easiest way to communicate. When I shared the forum I really often visited Wikipedia to help me with gay porn jargon. Nothing wrong with that, but my point is that they use jargon on the wrong places. For example: user manuals for consumers should be understandable for consumers. The words The quantitative evaluation . . . . could be said on a daily news bulletin. Sometimes it feels as if they take maximum effort to tell things in a way that nearly nobody understands what they mean. It is difficult enough using simple words, considering that I could not explain properly what I meant.

Willful stupidity - when people are too lazy to think, so they don't and stupid comes out instead.

When someone says their name or has it on a name tag and people don't ask them their preference but just assume that they can call them any variation of their name they want. Daniel becomes Danny or Dan, Joshua becomes Josh.

When people use an acronym, then say the words.
"I need that ASAP,as soon as possible".Use one or other, not both.
