I would prefer the movie to follow the book's closely though, I really dont mind if it turns out to be a 5 hour long movie! Anyway its full of twists and "drama"!
What you want is a mini series!
Movies and books are different media, you can't just slavishly copy from one to the other or you get a really shit movie. You have to ADAPT a book into a film, and when you do that well you condense the book down to it's core themes and characters, and then built that into a great movie.
I think the best movie in it's own right is still the third, and it strays from the book a lot, but it perfectly encapsulates the core themes and characters, so the result is brilliance. Probably the worst of the films is 4 which completely loses track of the core characters and utterly messes up Dumbledore to an unforgivable extent. Another example of a really bad movie adaptation is 6 where the core plot is utterly lost and the fluff that pads the core plot in the book is senselessly promoted to the core of the movie. Book 6 is all about Voldemort's life, the Horcurxes, and the mysterious Half Blood Prince, the romance is secondary and happens around that core plot, the movie inverts that, and hence doesn't even fit it's title!
