Hay Guys,

Just wondering if any of you out there have had a IBM PC that has had the same issue that I currently have.

When I turn on the PC the processor fan just goes at FULL SPEED and that is it. Nothing even displays on the monitor.

This started a while ago but I managed to get the PC to boot reading fixes on Google Searches, like changing the monitor or re setting the BIOS. Changed the memory. Changed the BIOS battery

But now none of those things do the trick. Then there was another idea to change the power supply. I did that last night but no change :(.

I have a feeling that the motherboard might now have failed.

Really alloying that it is not a standard ATX motherboard so I might just have to bin the WHOLE PC which is a great shame as it is a nice solid case.

Unless anyone else has had this issue and know how to fix it. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks

Si

Sorry to say this is usually a sign of a fried motherboard. It means it's so dead it can't even regulate the fans, so they fail safe to full speed.

I would split the odds evenly between the motherboard, CPU, and powers supply.

CPU - Usually CPU's don't fry unless they have been mistreated. Did you build this computer? If so, it's possible that there is too much or too little thermal paste on the heat sink and the CPU is running too hot. Or you overclocked it. If you haven't been tinkering with the CPU settings, then it is not likely to be the problem.

POWER - If you bought this computer off the shelf then it certainly has a crappy power supply. If you added more memory and hard drives and external USB devices or a high powered graphics processor - you may be overtaxing the power and it has just given out. (This happens a lot.) This is less likely to be the problem if you are a serious hobbyist and carefully selected a highly spec'ed name brand PSU for your build.

MOTHERBOARD - MB's are prone to assaults on all sides: heat, electricity, dust, flakey hardware, and user "tinkering".

Where to go from here? If it was me, I would want to connect a better PSU to the computer and see if it is a power problem. If that doesn't solve it, then the new PSU becomes the first piece of equipment in the new computer rebuild.

I hadn't thought of power, that could indeed be a problem, if the mobo isn't getting the right voltage it won't power itself up.

I don't think it can be CPU (or memory for that matter), because then you'd expect the mobo to give a beep code corresponding to what ever is bust. No beep at all, and the fans staying on full power implies to me that the mobo never gets going, either because it's not happy with the power, or because it's dead.

Taken the CPU out and it looks OK, but you cant physically tell by looking at it anyway. But did notice that it is the same socket 775 that my other PC has and that only has a HT chip in it, so this might be the opportunity to upgrade that one. Checked the spec of the motherboard and YAY it can take it

Got Chris to come around with a power supply he had, but when I plugged that in I got a very quiet peeeep from the PC speaker. Not an error code beep. not getting any of them at all.

Last night found manual for the PC on line, and there are loads of error LED's inside the box. So last night powered it back up. Fan FUN speed, but no error LED's alight. :-(

SO maybe I need to find another power supply and see if that does the trick. I will see what the power supply of my other PC is when I take the top off later in the week, and somehow test that.

I will keep you posted. Bloody annoying as it is my ripping PC, so now ripping on my other PC is VERY slow
