I can't believe this almost slipped my mind... but now that it's been reinstated, I find myself once again with a heavy heart and tears close to overflowing....
Nine years ago today, the music world suffered a terrible loss when R&B singer, Aaliyah Dana Haughton was tragically killed in a plane crash. After filming ended on her latest video, "Rock The Boat"; Aaliyah, her stylist, assistant and several others decided to return earlier than expected on a smaller flight than the one she originally embarked on in the Bahamas. Several minutes after take-off, the small Cessna, which was overloaded with filming equipment and personal items nosedived. Within moments, she was gone.
She was only 22 years old.
I remember where I was the moment I heard the news: there was a block party in my neighborhood that day. I was with friends and someone walked up to me and told me that they heard the news on the radio. I thought they were pulling my chain; I had just seen her on television earlier that week, talking about her filming the video for "Rock the Boat". I went home and turned on my radio and they were playing songs by her; back to back... I knew it was true...
I sit here; nine years later, listening to her music... I still miss her. You knew it was summer if the latest Aaliyah track was burning up the airwaves: it was almost a "given". I still expect to hear something new from her only to realize that it will never happen.
While I play her greatest hits album, "I Care 4 U"; I share my thoughts, my tears, my heart... to this amazing performer that always left you mesmerized with her soulful voice and powerful dance moves. There is no doubt in my mind that she would have been even bigger than she was back then. She was sweet, funny, beautiful, talented... she was truly, as one of her hit songs proclaims, "One In A Million".
Rest in peace, Baby Girl. You are still and always missed.
Loads of love,

P.S. I've posted her last video, "Rock the Boat". I remember watching it the day it premiered on a TV show entitled, "106th and Park". Her brother was there to present the video... I sat there and cried so hard.... when the video ended, they cut back to the studio audience; many others also shedding tears and in pain... they played the video again that day, something they never did... wow. It's funny how much we remember the sad memories...
