Repair a corrupt file

Hi Guys,
Hoping for some help. I downloaded a movie in 3 compressed files and tried to open with WinZip. I eventually was able to open Part 1 with 7-Zip, but part 2 and 3 are corrupt and cannot be opened. I deleted them and re-downloaded a few times to make sure. They are not .001 file extensions, so HJ Split did nothing.

The completed .avi file (in Properties) is 775mB. I cannot open it with Windows Media Player, but can open and play it with DivX. The movie length on DivX says 1:27:27 - so it appears to be the complete movie - but it stops around 28:00. I can't move through the film - it says "Seeking functionality may be limited. This file appears to be corrupted." I have to let the film play on its own.

I tried to repair the damaged parts with ParNRar, but it did not work. I can’t try ZipRepair Pro without buying it.

I cannot contact the OP to reupload the parts – and this is a rare vintage film I have been looking for a long time. The actor I really wanted to see is in the corrupted parts!

Does anyone know of any free utilities that can repair a damaged file part?
Or am I missing an obvious solution?

Windows has problems sometimes with some type of files.... Try playing on either the KMPlayer or the VLC MediaPlayer, they are both FREE. There used to be a thread in the Help Section with descriptions and links to the downloads but it seems to have gone.

I had a similar problem with some files. I load them down, sometimes more often, like you, and the files were okay. But no programm (I tried some, even trial and buy software e.g. WinZIP and WinRAR, also the free 7-ZIP) was able to open this archive. The files were named like that: "...avi.zip, ....avi.z01, ....avi.z02...". All programms called me that it is no archive and can't be opened, or it would be corrupted, a part is missing or something similar. It happened with some movies in the same way and I can not believe all parts should be corruptet or missed. :?

I found also no solution, but to load down the movie from another source, where it was only a normal ZIP-file. I was happy to find it again. But I have also movies, where I didn't find them again yet...

I wish you the same, that you will find the movie in a better archive type.

we need some more information. Where did you download the files and which extension do they have? This sounds a LOT as if the files come from filesmonster or one of these useless make-you-pay hosters.

Thanks for all the suggestions and replies, guys.

I tried the VLC player - when I tried to open the file, it said something about a damaged file and asked if I wanted VLC player to repair the file. I said yes.

It did play the file but ended at the exact same point as DivX and Windows Media Player:worried:

I will download and try the KM player next month (I am too close to my monthly limit to download any more for April) and report back.

Hi JoeR,
I agree rapidshare is a decent hoster. AT least now it is clear that we are talking about rarfiles and not zipfiles. I think the solution is simple. The file links you posted are all 100 MB in size. It is very unlikely that the file you are looking for is EXACTLY 300 MB in size. Usually that last piece has a different size. Therefore I believe that you do not have all parts which are necessary to extract the movie. Sorry for that.

There is a useful little (free) program which you can use on movies to provide information. It's called GSpot. It will tell you for certain if your movie files are complete or not (truncated).

It seems likely there are more parts to this movie than what I have.

I tried googling the links but didn't get anything further..unless anyone can suggest a way to find the missing files?

Where did you d/load from.... do you remember the title of the clip.... if you know the day you got them then check your Internet History, if you haven't cleared out the cache the links to the page will still be there.

Hi , I wiil try to help , when you have a trouble like this 1st step repair (rebuild) the archive and try to re -open it again, If the problem continues, you can use atubecatcher with the video converter option and change the video format, this works for me 95 % of the times, If you cant fix it, doesnt matter how many times you download the archive again , The archive is corrupt and need to be upload it by the uploader. Another thing is that with atubecatcher you can join several videos ( ext wmv 001 etc, etc ) and make one from the same series and changing the video format, I change the video format from a downloaded video when says that is a specific format but doesnt run on a video player.
