While it is nice to see someone say thanks in a more personal way, the fact is that using the thanks button not only keeps older post from being bumped ahead of new ones, but it also adds to the posters reputation, which helps them "level up" and gain VIP status. So you actually do more for the poster by using the "Thanks" button than by leaving a thanks reply....:)
