So I've been in my new apartment for a week now, and for the most part I really like it. The landlord has to call it an "efficiency" but it really could be called a one-bedroom. It has a good size living room area with a counter-top bar to serve as the dining area. It has a brand new stove and dishwasher, but I'm going to have to get my own microwave. There is a wall that separates the living and bedroom area with a door size throughway. It's because there is no door that they have to call it an efficiency. The wall also has a open area of about 18 inches at about the five foot height level. It has a fairly large bathroom with a full size bath, and a walk in closet that would make a woman with a lot of shoes jealous. And the rent amount is fairly decent too.

But here is the few bad things: This one will change as the seasons progress, but right now at about 4:00pm, which is the time that I usually get home from work, the sun is showing directly through the sliding glass door going out to the porch. BTW I'm on the 2nd level of two. So right now it gets pretty hot about that time, but the rest of the time with the sliding door open, it stays pretty cool. I only have to run the air conditioner for the time the sun is on the window. Second, there is a train track not to far away and cargo trains are constantly going by. Well, maybe not constantly, but quite a lot. Third, though it does have onsite laundry, it's $3 in quarters to wash and dry a load. That's not the bad part. Where the hell do you get quarters from because there is no change machine! I asked the store I work at if I can get a roll of quarters and they said they no longer sell coin rolls to customers. And when I use a debt card for all my buys its not like I get change. Am I going to have to go to the bank every week to get quarters? That sucks, but I can handle it.

This was just to get an apartment that I signed a one year lease for, I can only imagine what people go through to by a house. I've never heard of anyone getting a trial period to live in a house or apartment before hand to see if it is a place that they actually want to live in. I can't imagine forking out a couple hundred thousand for a house and then find out you don't like the house, or the area, for some reason. I wouldn't want to break a lease but at least losing a security deposit to leave is a lot easier to deal with than a house.

Overall, I do like the place that I moved into and think I'm going to have a good time here, but someone ought to look into how to have a prebuy trial to make sure a house or apartment is something that you really want rather than a one time look that takes about 20 minutes.

Congrats on the new place, it's always a chance when moving. My apt is the same when it comes to the sun in the evening, I've turned it into a positive by sitting outside, reading and sunbathing :p. As for the laundry, that is actually why I left a previous place. Having to pay for laundry in quarters is a pain. At least it is on site, it would be off-site which is so much worse. Some grocery stores will sell quarters in rolls. Or you can go to an offsite laundry-mate and get them there (use their machines).
