The piece has become renowned and infamous in that it was written (well I say written, the music and arrangement was - the words are Psalm 50) in the 1630's and was performed exclusively at the Sistine Chapel - so exclusive that it was punishable by death to perform it elsewhere or to write it out and only 3 handwritten copies were sanctioned. Then around 1770 a 14yr old boy german boy on holiday in Rome heard it in the Sistine Chapel just the once and later that evening he wrote down the whole score from memory and it was soon published in London and so the ban, now useless, was lifted.....
