The whole circus about SOPA has nothing to do with principles. It is all about money. The sex industry was one of the major parties who made internet as important as it is now. They discovered that they could make online a lot more money than in the offline sector.
They developed aggressive methods to reach costumers. One of the consequences was that the average age for children to come in contact with porn lowered to eleven years! It didn’t bother them, nor the politicians who represented their interests.
In the beginning there was no worry at all about illegal distribution of porn. It was cheap advertisement. People got interested in porn and would automatically end on the “legal” sites and spend their money there.
The sex industry behaved as pirates themselves. Warner Bros and other companies went to court several times, because the sex guys used illegal music for their products.
Since the recession people spend less money, also for porn. So the free sites offer a nice alternative for their sex addiction that is mainly created by that sex industry. And now they are moaning: "it is not fair".
They behave like drug dealers. First give some shots for free and then when you are an addict you have to pay.
So when they really have the principles they are talking about, they should forbid to show, or advertise porn on the free internet. Only in a special section you can watch porn, if you have a license (only available when you are 18+). But such a thing would decrease their income dramatically.
The USA is the world leader in the porn industry (Brazil nr. 2 and The Netherlands nr. 3). It generates huge amounts of money. So it is no incident that SOPA is their invention.
There is also another point to mention. Copyright differs from patents. Copyright is for free (I am told). But when you make an invention you need to have a patent to protect your invention. A patent costs you a lot of money. When you don’t have such an amount of money you can’t protect your invention. History shows that a lot of inventers never earned a dime with their invention (read the history of the inventor of the zipper). Maybe it is time to bring those things in balance.
For me SOPA is a cheap SOAP.
