Hi Guys,

Someone sent me this small clip the other day.

This should be made COMPULSORY in all schools around the world. So WELL DONE IRELAND for doing this.

About two guys in school. One very confident and one VERY shy. The homophobic gang spot them and start giving abuse. The shy lad runs off. The next day when the shy lad comes into school everyone knows his secret and they stare at him. A guy in a green shirt shorts this at the locker room.

They all then go into the main hall, and the homophobic gang comes in and gives more abuse. The guy in the green shirt offers to hold his hand to the shock of the homophobic gang. Then loads of others in the room hold a hand of the same sex. This does not amuse the homophobic gang, and even one of the gang stands up and holds a hand of another guy.

The clip ends with the two original guys walking along hand in hand past some other school kids and not an eyelid is batted!

Now why cant everyone is life be like this!!!

It is only a 4 min ish clip

Thanks for sharing this - it really is a fantastically done video.

I'm sorry to say this is more an aspirational view of Irish schools than a descriptive one, but it's a nice look to a possible better future.

Based on my studying of psychology, I am of the firm belief that all homophobic behaviours begin inside onself - the fear of being gay or being thought of as unmanly - even though one is not necessarily the other.

It is a humanistic response to hate and attack in others that which we fear or revile within ourselves, sort of "killing it off" by proxy. When it gets to the bullying and assault level, it's already a drastic problem. The vid is great for the moral standard it proposes. I would like compulsory anti-bullying courses required from Kindergarten right through the end of High School, with a clear message against hate of any kind: race, religion, orientation, physical appearance, and any other differentiating characteristic.

I recall reading of a very interesting experiment, done in a Junior High school in the midwest USA back in the 1970's. In their Social Studies class, the students had been debating which "look" is more popular and acceptable, and some of the girls felt embarrassed and left out if they were not in the favoured group - blonde hair and blue eyes. The teacher came in one morning, announced that a visiting group of students would join them that afternoon, the visitors being from Korea. The teacher also explained that being Asian, no blonde hair or blue eyes are normally found among that race, and that all the blond and blue students were required to stay at home that afternoon, to avoid offending or causing discomfort to the Korean visitors.

The uproar of "that's unfair" was overwhelming, until the teacher calmly told the class that it was a joke, but that the joke was used to teach a valuable lesson about acceptance. The discussion of which look was best never occurred again. In the same vein, it would be great if high school jocks were encouraged to go and hold hands and share thoughts with out gay students at school. Surely a lesson in both humility and acceptance would be gained.

Nice to hope.
