"The European Handball Federation has introduced a rule which makes it impossible for the Sweden captain to wear a rainbow-coloured armband at the European Championship, which starts in Poland on Friday. Poland refuses to recognise same-sex marriages and Tobias Karlsson announced last week that he was intending to wear the armband “as a quiet manifestation for acceptance and that every person is of equal worth”.

However, on the eve of the tournament the Sweden team have been told that a new rule means the captain’s armband can from now on consist only of that country’s colours.

“I think it is a real shame,” Karlsson told the Swedish paper Aftonbladet after being told of the news. “It is sad that the EHF chooses that path and does not allow us to express our feelings about humanity and how I think people should be treated.

“I have to say I am surprised. We were told only a few days ago that it was OK to wear the armband. Norway’s and Iceland’s captains have been in touch about also wearing one so we sent a few to them.”

The vice-president of the EHF, the Swede Arne Elovsson, was not part of making the decision to introduce the rule but said afterwards: “My interpretation is that this question has never been raised before. Now that it was raised one had to make a decision and go back to the rules and try to interpret them from a global perspective. That is the explanation. There is logic in this and they were unanimous in their decision.”

The Law and Justice Party, which is opposed to LGBT rights, won the election in Poland in October last year and the country offers no recognition of same-sex relationships and has refused to recognise trans people.

Karlsson added: “I am not quite sure what we will use now. The two other armbands we have are red-and-white and black.”

Sweden play their first game on Saturday, against Slovenia.

It makes me very sad to see such predjudice right within the European Union.

The Polish authorities come out of this looking like petty small-minded pricks. I sure hope it back-fires on them.

Really? Is that an exciter for you. I honestly want to ask you: WHY?
Perhaps someone felt offended or personal attacked by this armband. So rules were introduced to ban it. It looks familar!

The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union it has become waste paper, or worse, toilet paper. http://www.europarl.europa.eu/charter/pdf/text_en.pdf"]

For the "caste" of politicians of the EU is important only the ECB and banks.

The European Commission does not say anything about it? Then we wonder why Europe is crumbling.

I thought in Europe we are way beyond that, it is also against the european charta which guarantees the rights of free personally developement, at least for my understanding.

tiny example : some jews wearing kippahs, it would be a scandal if was prohibited to wear these there if someone gets offended by this, same is with a rainbow striped armband.

Agree. Sad times for the EU. West losing battle over ''putinization'' of Eastern Europe :(

Any updates on this story? How did Sweden's first match with Slovenia end? I'm curious. I think this may have given the Swedes an incentive to win!

EHF did put this rule (temporary?) to their "Dresscodes" for participating sportsmen which does not allow to show any politcal statements there.
At least audience is not forbidden to wear those there ^^

Wow! You mean there's other stuff on the internet besides big juicy cum cannons? Why haven't I heard about this before now?

Of course I'm just kidding, Jamoo.

I could have Googled it but where's the fun in that? I thought there must be a member here who already knew.

Wow - seldom, really very seldom I've read such an extremely polite answer to a simple question! Actually it's always a boundless joy for me to learn here more about human cooperation! Thank you for this special aside! :)

Intersting how human rights get musdhed into "politics". Having a captain wear the mark of a given political party of politician, that would indeed be political, and, quite rightly would have no place on a sports team. But an emblem for human rights, that seems like a very different thing, and the kind of thing that seems very compatible with sport.

The call not to politicise is so often used to shelter oppressors.
