Swine Flu

Here's a statistic to make you think - it's like the portent of doom!!

Although it's not yet life-threatening to most people, this could have a huge effect on the economy, as if it isn't bad enough already!

The experts have predicted that by the end of August the UK could be having 100,000 cases a day!! It could mean that a quarter of the workforce will be absent from work!

All it needs to do is mutate and we could get 1918 all over again. That epidemic wiped out more people than the number who had died in the First World War! Science has obviously moved on but curently there is no cure, so it could still be devastating, even if only in economic terms if not in life.

I'm a fatalist so never worry about much, but it makes you think!

Wasn't there few years ago a 'Chicken Flu'?! It was artificially made just to destroy the Chinese economy at that time. This 'Swine Flu' is artificially made too.

Where did you get that information, Bo? Flu is a mutating virus and each strain that appears is ineffective to the cures we have until another one is invented.

Bird flu hasn't gone away but is still confined to animals, as was Swine flu until it jumped ship! Flu has a nasty habit of doing this which is what makes it so dangerous.

I wouldn't underestimate it or dismiss it out of hand! Once it gets hold it can spread very quickly.

OMG the Swine Flu. I work at the SPCA and ours has barn animals including pigs. We had to go through a whole lecture on what we would do if there was an out break. They str8 up told us if people start dying on the outside and it gets to pandemic levels then we are closing the gates and some of you will be living here on the property to take care of the animals. Seriously we got enough water and food to keep 18 people running the place for two months. Any who we had a person call us once asking if their guinea pig can get swine flu and pass it to his daughter.

Until bodies start dropping rapidly in the USA I am not going to freak out.

When the Bird Flu appeared and they started to scary us with that, they moved all Chinese chicken food from the markets in my country and they replaced it importing USA Chicken food. USA took over the trade in the whole region over here.

Also, there are many people and scientist who believe that all those flus are created in laboratory and they are probably some kind of biological weapon. Search Google and you will find more info about it.

Well I'm not going to doubt you, or agree with you because I don't know. I love conspiracy theory as much as anyone, but often they turn out to be just that.

I don't doubt that certain things go on, but if you believed every theory of this type you'd send yourself round the twist :p Similar things were said about HIV when that started, and there are probably hundreds more you could pick up on.

Maybe a grain of truth in some of it, but "I need proof dammit!!" :p (I'm sure that was a line in a movie LOL )

Yes, I agree, there are lots of horrible secret things go on behind the scenes, but that doesn't alter the fact that is does exist, however it came into being.

Haha... really liking the conspiracy theory mate! But as far as I know and have seen... swine flus is generally mild and self limiting. The only people who need worry are the old, infirm and immunosuppressed. And for them too, there is the option of a vaccine. I think its jus been hyped up a wee bit too much...

Actually they say the older ones are less vulnerable in this case, it's affecting the younger part of the population!

Swine flu is a virus, which is basically genetic information (DNA or RNA) enclosed in protein. The genetic information (RNA in swine flu) is what determines what the virus is made of, how it functions ect, and like all genetic information, it mutates - that's the basis of variation. Some variations are advantageous (like this strain of swine flu), so natural selection favors its propagation and reproduction. This is just evolution. Swine flu evolved to infect humans.

That's why I don't believe in these conspiracies. It's just nature being nature. It could happen to any type of pathogen - a virus, bacteria or protist - absolutely anywhere at any time.
