One of my biggest complaints from the franchise, as a whole, is:
NO GAY CHARACTERS!
I can under why it wasn't represented in Star Trek - even though it was set in the 23rd century - it aired in the 1960s. Keeping true to that, Enterprise, set in the 22nd century, wouldn't represent that from a time-line standpoint.
One would think, though, that by the third quarter of the 24th century, in which Next Generation and Deep Space Nine and Voyager are set, that some GLBT characters would crop up. From everything I've read and heard, it was Brannon Braga's strong opposition that kept such characters out of the franchise, even as background or supporting roles.
I couldn't agree more - this is a real blight on the franchise in my eyes.
They do have a sort-of anti-gay-discrimination episode when Riker falls for a gender-less alien who falls for him and then gets brain-washed back to being 'straight'. That really is it though. Pretty poor show for the hundreds and hundreds of episodes created.
Despite that blight on the series - I still love it. An optimistic vision of the future is hard to come by, most scifi focuses on a world where things are fucked up. Arguably more realistic, but I still love Roddenberry for his optimism - we should strive for a Star Trek future, even if it's probably unachievable.
I recently watched all of TOS, TNG, and DS9 in order (off work ill for a few months - lots of time to kill!) - I was really surprised by how good TOS was getting just as they cancelled it. You really got the feeling that they'd found their stride - and BAM - gone
Still - with the exception of the (slow) motion picture, the TOS films are a great continuation of the characters in the series.
I'd also forgotten how badly TNG started - it really did take them a few seasons to get into the groove - when the uniforms get collars, we're in business! And it just goes from strength to strength, ending on a real high. The TNG films are disappointing though - the BORG one was probably the high-point, but the later ones go down hill fast IMO - unlike the TOS films they are not loyal to the characters - but try to turn Picard into Kirk - seeing him joy-ride through a desert in a jeep was the point they jumped the shark IMO.
I loved DS9 - partly because it has a real story arc much more than any previous series. You can really see that they are competing with Bab5.
As far as I'm concerned - I pretend Voyager and Enterprise didn't happen. The last episode of Voyager is un-forgivable, and the pussification of the Borg in Enterprise (and indeed Voyager) is an equal cardinal sin. After DS9 it's all down-hill, and Enterprise is just pure sell-out. *ducks for cover*
As for favourites - you can't beat Picard as Captain, and Cisco is a worthy second, after his hair has migrated south from his head to his face that is.
As for cutest - I'm sorry to say I always had a crush on Wesley (bad pun, sorry), and other than that Jordi would top my list.
