The Unseen Inefficiency of Escalator Etiquette

I'd be one of the "standers". I stand on the right side pretty much only because I'm right handed and it feels more comfortable to hold the railing with my right hand than it does my left. With all the shoppes at the malls I think I'd get clobbered if I just stood on the left hand side. I get why there is a split for standers and walkers but the narrator is correct, there is a lot of wasted space with this concept. There is no LAW that says you can't stand on the left side, so next time I'm at the mall I think I'll try that. Let's see how many people I can piss off.

I'm a stander too. I'm seldom in such a hurry as to walk on the escalator.

But sometimes I look for the stairs and do that instead.

Please do not stand on the left. By doing so you will stop the flow of walkers and make the escalator much less efficient.

The most efficient use of the escalator would be for everyone to walk. Since not everyone is able to do that, it makes sense to accommodate both standers and walkers on the conveyance.
