BURMA....aka Myanmar

A military dictatorship....is probably the most repressive and cruel government on the planet....but for some reason, no one ever talks about it.

I have probably met someone from every country on the planet....except Burma. It is so tightly controlled, the toughest internet controls of anywhere. It citizens are not allowed to travel internationally...at all.

56 million or so people. Some of the government's recent practices, includes, rounding up 25,000 AIDS victims into camps to die. They do not allow treatment of AIDS because they don't recognize that it exists. Burma's government spends the least percentage of its GDP on health care of any country in the world.

Of course, they aren't in the dark ages, they are building a nuclear reactor with the help of the Russians and Indians. It does have the 12th largest army in the world.

Maybe...some of our governments aren't so bad after all...

No one talks about it because they have no oil, nor do they have any other resources that are of interest to our government...X_X

This is why I like to watch world news programmes on the BBC or Al Jazeera, which is actually quite a good news channel if you want to find out what's going on elsewhere in the world.

The main news tends to focus far too much on domestic issues, although being a far smaller island than the US we do tend to to have a lot more overseas news than I've seen or heard on US TV or radio.

And today we hear that Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to a further 18 months house arrest, where she has spent 14 of the last 20 years. Which conveniently for the regime will prevent her from taking any active part in the up-coming "elections"

I'm SO GLAD I've got access to the BBC and more world news because I think it gives you a much broader perspective. In the US, our news channels are only focused on appealing to particular political groups with ideological propaganda. There's a channel for right wingers (FoxNews) - a channel for left wingers (MSNBC) - and anyone who "tries" to be objective is labeled by one or the other based on the news they report, which is 98% US based. IT SUCKS! It's poisonious, sick and annoying and I hate it. It doesn't inform...it divides and that's TOTALLY what media and news reporting should NOT do. (mad now!)

peace anyway:rolling eyes:
