I figure the greater worry for Tom himself is when he discovers, if he hasn't already, that he can have the pick of the crop of all the drop-dead gorgeous dudes on Earth. Still, despite all the pitfalls, I'd rather be beautiful.
I don't mind all the fawning over him either---because I'm fawning too. But the moment the bloom of youth fades from his face, he can kiss that attention goodbye. Hope he will be prepared for that eventuality so it's not too harsh on him.
Tom's problem is that his skill...diving, is a young man's sport. And it's not a sport of $$$ contracts.
His money needs to come from his celebrity. He's a cute and charming boy, but that's a tough gig. Maybe he can thread the needle. But it's easy to see his options getting narrow.
Or maybe I'm wrong. He may become the new Dick Buttons of Olympic sport!
With his partner is an Oscar winning for best screenwriter, I can see few months later there's some biographical movie or books of Tom and his life as a bisexual Olympic diver. Then there will be a cynical comments appear that this open up thingy because Tom wants to get more famous and stuff and this lovey dovey stuff is just a set up. All will come eventually. People curiosity never failed.
For those not acquainted with Justin Lance Black, he is a pretty big deal. He started as a writer (and a good one), then produced his Milk script, winning an Oscar. He wrote and produced the HBO series Big Love and wrote the Leonardo DiCaprio movie J. Edgar.
After Proposition 8 passed in California, banning gay marriage, he founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) and used his movie money to hire former United States Solicitor General Theodore B. Olson and David Boies (who argued opposite sides at the US Supreme Court in Bush v. Gore) to lead the legal team challenging the anti-gay law. (They won each court case, including the appeal in the Supreme Court this past year.)
He took the transcript of the testimony in the first trial, and turned it into a play, 8, that he produced in Los Angeles and New York, and now offers it royalty-free to schools and community groups. (You can watch the whole play with George Clooney, Chris Colfer, Brad Pitt, Jane Lynch, Kevin Bacon, etc. on YouTube.)
It's hard to imagine what my life would have been like if I had someone like that by my side as a teenager as I came out and took my first steps as a gay man.
