Today, U2 made their new song "Invisible" available as a free download on iTunes. But, in a way, the song is even better than free: Bank of America has promised to give one dollar for each download of the track — which Bono has called a "sneak preview" of the band's next record — to (RED), the organization Bono cofounded in 2006 to help fight AIDS.

In total, the bank will contribute up to $8 million through 11:59 p.m. EST Monday night to (RED)'s charitable recipient, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. That organization provides HIV and AIDS treatment, as well as testing and prevention services, to people in the world's poorest countries. (RED) estimated that it would be able to raise up to $10 million from its partnership with Bank of America.

"We're taking all the energy around the Super Bowl and interest in what U2's doing and flipping it into the fight against HIV AIDS," Bono told USA Today recently. He also said that the track, which bursts with optimism as Bono sings about unity in a relationship, was not the first official single from the album. "We have another song we're excited about to kick off the album," he said. "This is just sort of a sneak preview – to remind people we exist."

Although the band said it would debut the track tonight during the Super Bowl, the group put the song on iTunes shortly after noon today. According to USA Today, the song will be removed from iTunes on Tuesday.

Over the past year, U2 have been hard at work with producer Danger Mouse on the follow-up to their last LP, 2009's No Line on the Horizon. The band has not yet announced a release date for the album – in fact, Bono has said he expects to be working on it for a couple months more – but the singer estimated it would come out in the summer. U2 will be Jimmy Fallon's first musical guest when he takes over The Tonight Show on February 17th.

The U2 song "Ordinary Love," which accompanied the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and came out on a limited-edition 10-inch in November, won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song. The track was also nominated in the same category for the Oscars; that awards ceremony takes place on March 2nd.

U2’s exclusive premiere of new single “Invisible” during the Super Bowl, in partnership with (RED) and Bank of America (reported here in late January), raised more than $3 million for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in 36 hours through free downloads on iTunes, the band announced Tuesday morning (Feb. 4). The success of the campaign prompted Bank of America to exceed its initial pledge of $2 million. All proceeds from additional copies of “Invisible” sold for $1.29 beginning today, will be donated to the Global Fund as well.

Released Sunday afternoon, “Invisible” saw more than 1 million free downloads within the first hour after the commercial aired during the first quarter of the Super Bowl telecast. By the time the free downloads ended just before midnight EST Monday night, the song had generated more than 3 million free downloads. “Invisible” is also expected to preview U2’s upcoming studio album, slated for release in late spring/early summer.

Since being co-founded by Bono and Bobby Shriver in 2006, (RED) has raised more than $250 million for the Global Fund to drive corporate donations in the fight against AIDS. Bank Of America’s recent contribution is part of a two-year, $10 million commitment by the company.

“These are much-needed funds for the fight to end the AIDS pandemic in our lifetime and to get closer to the goal of eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV by 2015,” Deborah Dugan, CEO of (RED) said in a statement.

Anne Finucane, global strategy and marketing officer, Bank of America added, “U2 provides the talent, (RED) brings a wealth of experience in the fight against AIDS, and we offer an immense platform to help get the message out. Together, we can produce significant results, as evidenced by the awareness we’ve been able to build and money we’ve been able to raise over the past few days.”

Sunday’s Super Bowl was a record telecast interms of Halftime Show viewers and music licenses, with the top three publishers reporting more than 20 major synch licenses in featured commercials.
