Valentines%20Day%202x13-The-St-Valentine-s-Day-Maxssacre-happy-endings-29035386-1280-720.jpg

In America Valentine's Day is another 'Consumer Orgy' generating tens of billions of dollars in revenue for businesses just like Easter, Christmas and at least a dozen other 'Days'.

I'm not against Valentine's Day. Showing one's love for their romantic partner is something we should do not once a year but every day. I know my partner and I show our love for each other every day (and every night, too! hehe).

If you want to share Valentine's Day customs in your part of the world or some special personal story please elaborate.

There is certainly a corporate and media barrage in Ireland to try turn Valentines into a consumer-fest, but, many people choose to ignore the consumerism, and just make an effort to do something romantic with their darling beloved. Our recent economic explosion has done a lot to remind us all what's really important in life, and consumerism isn't important.

Personally, I booked the day off work, cooked my darling beloved's favourite meal, opened a nice bottle of wine, and enjoyed a day in each other's company. We don't buy will cards, or give silly gifts, and we never have in the 10 years plus we've been together.

gb2000ie You sound like a very good partner.

It seems every Irish man I've ever had the pleasure to keep company with were sweet and creamy on the inside but tough and hard on the outside. The type of guys I would want at my side in a fight ;)

My earliest memories of Valentine's Day are back in grade school. In the first and second grades we were free to exchange Valentine's Cards and little boxes of candy hearts with classmates. It gave me such a warm feeling to give a card and some candy to the boys I had feelings for. I had no notion about sex or all the other adult notions about Valentine's Day. To me it was a chance to express my feelings to Terry and Bruce who were my best friends and to do it in a public way.

But things changed in the third grade. My teacher, Ms. Foster, was a bitch, lol. She told us boys should not give Valentine's Cards or candy to other boys because it wasn't "natural" and that it would make "God" mad at us. That was my first experience with homophobia and discrimination.

I should also tell you that before I left the third grade I did some mean things to Ms. Foster. I made up a nickname for her. It was 'Perfume Factory' because she wore too much perfume. It stuck and every kid in school called her that. I also looked for any mistakes she made in spelling or math then pointed them out to the class. We would giggle while her back was turned. It annoyed the shit out of her. I also threw a fountain pen at her for picking on a friend's essay answer. She was wearing a cream colored silk blouse and the pen emptied it's ink all over the front of it. I paid dearly for that little performance but my mother and I laughed all the way home.

I have no idea why I shared all of that other than to say how quickly we can lose our innocence.

For true lovers, all days are valentines day!

Yeah, like Christmas, Valentine's Day has become a mega commercial hype. The stores simply couldn't wait till Christmas was over to get all the Valentines Day stuff on the shelf. I say only gifting doesn't offer love. Love is priceless! :)

The day is an excuse to buy your loved one flowers and proclaim your love for them. I like it.

OOPS! I mistakenly voted for the second option 'No'. That should've been option number 3 - Yes it's a 'Consumer Orgy' like America!! Sorry! :duh: ;)

Yup, over hyped as always.

never understood the need for 'a day' to tell someone you love them, just say it any and every day of the year:)
