So, I've been considering going vegetarian for a while now, but I keep feeling afraid of missing on protein and everything. I can already manage a no-meat Monday, but that is only symbolic. Also, I often find myself without many food options, since I don't have great cooking skills with soy or tofu, so does anyone here have some hints to give me?

I think the best way to start is to google words like "vegetarian", "vegetarian recipes", "vegetarianism", those words give quite good results and you'll find lots of suitable information :)

And btw, thanks. You just made a retired librarian happy, this searching information used to be my favorite part of my work ;)

A lot depends on how strict you want your vegetarianism to be. If you need to avoid all animal protein then it is a struggle to keep a healthy balance in your diet. We cheat, we never ever buy meat products but we top up our protein with the occaisional egg or kipper. The herring is not an endangered fish so it's not so bad as others. I never use tofu, I dont see how anyone can enjoy that stuff. Try going a step at a time, losing processed meats, bacon, sausage, first coz the're the worst, then lose red meat then chicken and keep moving in the right direction as your kitchen skills improve. The human body is amazingly adaptable, it can get used to all kinds of weird diets so dont be afraid to experiment with food. One esential recipe, if you can make lentil dhall, you can eat well for pennies.

It would be more meaningful if you grow your own vegetables. That way you realize the substances you have to use to fend off pests and how much of them do not wash off at all. Do not push it to the extreme, just approach it with flexibility and balance. What I found out in my case is, it made me lose excess weight when I went meatless for long periods.

Oh yes thats so good if you can grow your own. My husband's stepfather has a greenhouse, sometimes we get some produce from there and it tastes fabulous, better than anything from the shops, and free of additives.

My daughter stopped eating meat and fish when she started her study in biology. So since that time I have to cook vegetarian when she visits me. As whisper already said, google a bit and you will find all the information. You can get all the stuff you need to keep healthy. During her student time my daughter was a competition rower and did a lot of running. Always top fit and never ill.
