That's why I back everything up on DVD... The only problem is that now I have over a thousand DVD's, and no real filing system, other than titles written with a sharpie on the disc, to help me find something in particular...

If you can, invest in Solid State storage. It's so much more reliable than HD ones and is worth the extra expense. You can throw them around the house for an hour and it'll still come back to you wagging it's tail, begging to impart some porn :)

With hard drives getting cheaper and cheaper, I recommend a USB/eSATA backup drive instead of writing everything to DVDs. To make it clear: I'm talking about using two external hard drives, one "production" drive and a backup. Every now and then I copy the whole stuff from the production drive to the backup one. This takes a couple of hours but who cares as long as the confuser is doing this on its own?

I tried to recover the stuff that I had on optical disks some time ago and found that a lot of the disks had problems, even though I thought I bought quality media only ~X(. The same was true for for burned audio CDs. I don't trust optical media any more .

I would go for SSD but it is still way too expensive. Plus it doesn't protect you from corrupted file system and the likes.

The SSD's are indeed still expensive, plus they are only guarnteeded for so many thousand read/write cycles
I would love to have a back up hard dish or dvd's but guys i cant lol i have WAY too many hard disks and WAY WAY too much porn to keep backups lol
i have like 2.5 or 3TB on several hdd's
now u try recording 2.5TB onto 4.3GB disks lol

THE best solution would be a NAS raid system with like 6TB on it lol

p.s. what program can u use in an attempt to recover? i tried one but since its not being listed in the my computer i couldnt use it...

Hi Irishman,
if you really dropped the disk and it is physically broken, you can't recover anything using software. Professional help (opening the drive, using special hardware to read the media) is way too expensive for this kind of data.

If the device is visible from the system but just doesn't mount because of a file system corruption, this means it is physically ok and you can usually fix it using operating system tools (on windows: "chkdsk <drive-letter>: /r" from a command prompt).

A friend of mine once was able to recover a broken disk after knocking the disk hard with a hammer right in the middle of the drive, where the spindle is. But can't really recommend this, it's only a "last resort" method...

:rofl:Thought I had a PROBLEM with about 1.5TB of porn on shaky storage! (My philosophy has always been - SAVE it now (BEFORE government CLAMPS DOWN BIGTIME) and I'll watch it later;))

So what IS the best solution for long term storage - I've got external HD backup right now but if that fails I would lose an EMPIRE of porn I've mostly gotten for free....and that would make me feel like a failure as a human being....that would suck!

little help buddies?;)

I have, did you miss the part about me having over 1,000 DVD's? The bad part, other than my never having come up with a decent filing system to easily locate a certain file or disc, is that I have destroyed over half a dozen DVD writers... They will only burn so many disc before they become unstable...:duh:

Well I have three external hard drives, with those "must have absolute favourites" always saved onto 2 of them - just in case

Hey garth33,
the solution for you is decentral backups - share everything you've got with your buddies from GH ;)

A Network storage system (NAS) running raid 5 or something is the best solution, now all i need is the cash lol

I feel your pain. I can also recommend some things to help (I work for the IT office at our school).

If you have access to a Mac, you can put the HDD into an external drive case and try to mount it using DISK UTILITY. Disk Utility is usually great at reading, even damaged or corrupted disks.

If this does not work, there is another great program called Data Rescue. I believe the newest one is DR3. This is usually the fastest way to determine if the data is irreversibly lost. I've never known Data Rescue to not be able to back up damaged drives unless the drive is completely fubared.

So there you go and good luck!
