this is a tricky subject...but at what age are you able to make your own choices?

I can join the army and go to war at 18...but i cant drink a beer:?

all governments make there own decisions, but what do you think?

I know plenty of people who are under the age of 18 who were making "good" decisions and plenty of people over the 22 limit who still are as dumb as ever. I think 18 and 22 are average numbers to control the general population from making decisions that might end up considered "terrorist" acts. I have to say though, I'm pretty glad some people don't start voting until their 21/22; sometimes people haven't gotten to know the world around them and may vote in a way that can really hurt people and haunt them (me) for the rest of their (my) life.

Whosh...I'd be dangerous if I was 13 or 15 these days, but I'd love to give it a try....

I think you do have to draw a line somewhere....here in the US its generally 18...but if thats the age that distinguishes you from a juvenile to an adult then so be it....you cant then determine any act that a "juvenile" commits is the act of an adult...because here in the States if you were to have consensual sex with a 17 yr old, he is now an innocent juvenile (and god knows at 17 i'd hump a horse) you'd have some serious issues...however...if that same 17 yr old gets in a fight and hits a boy who drops on the ground, hits his head and dies, he can serve his life in prison...

A kid is a kid and when he's not you can be sure there's an adult that has influenced his ways...one way or another.

here in Germany we had an election some weeks ago and a few days before the election, they made an election for people under age who were not allowed to vote in the real election. Yes, there were more votes for the nationalist parties than in the real election, but the most votes would still have gone to the social democrats, the green and the left.
So is people under 18 were the only once to decide in Germany we would have a government of the social democrats and the green in charge instead of what we got now...

If it's about 'making your own choices' I think children should be empowered to do so much, much younger than 18, and should be listened to, given control over their own destiny, as opposed to being the victim of moral hatred and discriminating stereotypes. So I think children should have a vote regarding many things long before 18. I know that in Austria the general voting age has been lowered to 16, alongside other forms of civic engagement and participation. I'd be very comfortable moving it down further, at least to 14. I don't think there should be a group of people set aside for whom others are allowed to enact their prejudices upon; since we know that age doesn't mean a damn thing, people under 18 shouldn't suffer from a lack of legal rights and protections.

This has happened to me, except that he wasn't a neighbor, He was a kid I worked with and very persistent...

But the age of consent in my state is 16, and being 17 (and 10 months) he was allowed to join the National Guard. His mother even let him move into an apartment in my building. When I bought my house he moved in with me. We were together for 4 years. Then he decided to join the Navy as a medic and was stationed at Camp Pendleton half way across the country...

Seriously, in the early 70's the USA lowered the drinking age to 18.
We had a blast!
Cracked up our cars, got slapped with $300 DUI's, lost a few friends along the way to death, and thought only others would get hurt.

That didn't work.

Now days the laws are very strict due to our actions.
Maybe more controls will see a longer life for many of our current youth.
