So most of us know about the horrible movie that almost shattered Mariah Carey's career: the ill-fated "Glitter". Personally, I didn't think it was that horrible, but it was released around one of the most horrible days in history: September 11, 2001. The nation was in turmoil and considering no one was really in the mood for movie watching, everything regarding it was critically panned; including the album, which was released that fated day (the movie premiered the following week).
My cousin (who is actually a major Mariah fan) and I set out that weekend to see the movie and I actually had no problems with it. Yes, it was her first major starring role and she could've had some pointers, but it wasn't too terrible. It was also noted that the film's producer, Vondie Curtis-Hall and Mariah had very different ideas when it came to the film. Mariah said, "It started out as a concept with substance, but it ended up being geared to 10-year-olds."
Regarding the album itself, Mariah said: "I released it on September 11, 2001. The talk shows needed something to distract from 9/11. I became a punching bag. I was so successful that they tore me down because my album was at number 2 instead of number 1. The media was laughing at me and attacked me. 'Glitter' was ahead of its time. Today it’s 'in' to make 80’s music."
The soundtrack album, which was more of a concept piece than an add-on to Mariah's work, is one of my actual favorites. I love the 80's throwback of it (which the movie was based in) and there are some very amazing tracks, including a couple of covers. The two songs posted here are some of those covers (the second song samples an 80's tune called "Funkin' 4 Jamaica (NY)"). I love the fun and flirty nature behind them... if you've never checked it out, feel free to do so; I think it all got a lot more flack than it deserved.
