What´s going on between the Browse-button and my computer ?

My problem is this :

I´ve got three specific pics (ordinary jpeg-files) I want to upload in one of my threads. The strange thing is, when I press the Browse-button and clic open the Pictures-folder, those three specific files are gone with the wind :eek::eek:!

When I open the Pictures-folder directly on my computer the ordinary way, they are there, just like all the other files in the folder. So I know they haven´t vanished into outer space. They also open nicely, so there doesn´t seem to be anything wrong with them.

But when I open my thread, and hit the Browse-button to upload and post them they´re invisible :(:(:(.

Could someone please explain what´s going on ???

(I´ve uploaded and posted a few hundred pics and never had THIS problem with any other files.)

That sounds immensely odd!

Can I ask what OS you're using, and perhaps a screenshot of what you do see when you go try to do this upload?

Cheers,

B.

On the 'puter I´m using now, it´s Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bits). About the screenshot I´ll try to do that tomorrow, but right now I´m busy and then going off to bed.

But the window that opens when i click Browse doesn´t look odd in any way, it looks exactly as usual - the ONLY strange thing is that those specific three files doesn´t show.

Big thanks anyway!!!!

I'm just hoping that I'll spot something subtle when looking at the screen cap TBH - I'm having a hard time imagining what the cause could be - what ever it is, I'm guessing it's something very rare, or something very esoteric.

Hi again!

Here we go with the screencaps!

The first (to the left) is of the window to the Physique-folder, a subfolder to the Pictures-folder on my computer. The three files that are puzzling me, are the three files named "AMG John Davidson Black...", between "AMG Joe Leitel Don Fuller 001" and "AMG John Miller 001".

The second (to the right) is the window that opens when I´ve hit the Browse-button and opened the Physique-folder - those three files just aren´t there ! Empty! Void!

And I´ve scrolled through the entire Browse-window to check if they have moved to some other place for some reason, but no - nothing!

It´s not a very big deal to me, but I´m puzzled :thinking: and a bit annoyed:angry:.

At the same time it´s a bit fun that it also puzzling you, since I know you´re one of the big puter wizards on GH....

I think I may have an idea - the brows window is filtering on file extension, and that filter does NOT include .jpeg, just .jpg, could these files have the newer 4-letter extension rather than the older 3-letter extension?

If you change that filter to show all files (*.*), do the files show up then?

But on the other hand...

There´s lots and lots of JPEG´s that show up without any problem....

And how do I change the filtering? Should I write "jpeg" into the filterbox myself???

The filter box is a drop-down menu - it should have an option for all files. If the files suddenly show up when you do that, then you know the problem is with the file extension.

Thanks again, but no - when I click on the filter box, NO OTHER alternative occurs than the ones already written in the box. I´ve tried it just five minutes ago, so no - no other alternatives :(:(:(.

And as I said in my last post - IF this really is the problem, THEN why do other jpeg-files show up in the window???

You have file extensions hidden, so you can't see what extensions your files really have. Some JPEGs end in .jpg, some in ,jpeg, and some even in other less likely extensions like .jp2 and stuff like that. The filter being applied to that view is obviously blocking the file you want to see.

I don't have a Windows machine here at home, so I can't find the exact keystrokes, but it must be possible in Exporer to reveal the file extensions on files, if you do that, you'll probably find a funny extension on those two mystery files, and if you change that funny extension to something normal you will almost certainly find the files showing up just fine.

I'm assuming this issue is because you are using the Pictures folder, and because Microsoft think they know best. You might be able to get around this problem by using another browser, maybe.

Yes, well I realized I was a bit to hasty...

When I checked out the detailed info on the individual files, I found out that the files that do show up are .JPG, but the three files "missing" are .JPEG.

So the filter in the Browse-button window really seems to be the trouble. (But my net browser isn´t IE, it´s Firefox...)

Am I getting you correct if I guess there are TWO ways of getting around the problem? -

1) To change the filter in the Browse-button window - but then again how? Clicking on the filterbox doesn´t show any alternatives than the ones already written in the box.

2) To change the file extension on the individual files from .jpeg to .jpg. In that case how?

Hrrrrmmmm... I´m beginning to think this is to much trouble. And you´ll soon start to feel I´m stalking you.

But thanks again!!!

Excellent - at least the problem now makes sense and has gone from a mystery to something well defined!

I was afraid that would be the case. That dialogue box is a Windows dialogue rather than an IE one, so it makes sense that it will be the same in all browsers on that version of Windows.

yup - exactly right

1) To change the filter in the Browse-button window - but then again how? Clicking on the filterbox doesn´t show any alternatives than the ones already written in the box.

Since there are no more options, can you click and type? If you can, *.* would be what you want to type.

2) To change the file extension on the individual files from .jpeg to .jpg. In that case how?

I don't have a windows machine here to test on, but I imagine you should be able to rename the file and change the extension that way. As a total hack, you could open the file in some image editor and do a "Save As ...", but like I say, that;s a hack, it should be posible to re-name a file to have a different extention in Windows Explorer - I'm sure some of the Windows users on the forum here should be able to help.

Hrrrrmmmm... I´m beginning to think this is to much trouble. And you´ll soon start to feel I´m stalking you.

But thanks again!!!

No worries mate - I like to be able to give back to the community in what ever way I can. I don't have the internets to share anything bigger than photos to this forum, so the least I can do is share my techie skills as and when users are in need.

I really hope a windows user can chime in here with exact instructions for re-naming a file to a new file extension, that would be by far the simplest solution.

If you open the pics in Microsoft's PAINT program you can then go to "Save as" ... and then choose between JPEG; BMP; GIF; PNG and the "other formats" button will give you the TIFF option too:)

You can find PAINT in Vista by going "All programs" then open the "Accessories Folder"

It would be my pleasure and pride to suck and lick both of you - maybe both at the same time ;););) - whenever and whereever you want :pP:pP:pP!

Thank you both so very much!!!

@ slimjim
I´ll sure try your suggestion, and I´ll come back to tell if it works out alright. But that´s for tomorrow. Right now I´m getting tired. No more fighting the puter today - it´s time for a wank, a shower and then off to bed. ;)
