Hello Group,

I've probably amassed over 500 VHS tapes of gay XXX from the late 80's through the late 90's. It's a wonder I'm not blind ;). What has everyone else done with theirs? Donate them to Goodwill for a tax writeoff?....or sell them? (what about the legal age issue?), or just toss them. Just curious what the group thinks. Thanks to all for the great posts! Terrific forum with a lot of great people.

Giving them away now could be tricky, with the age issue as you mentioned. It was legal at some point to use someone under 18 - at least no laws existed....but proving all this would be a legal and financial nightmare. Why not get an inexpensive video capture card, connect it to your vhs deck and burn your stuff to DVD for archival keeping? :)

I would copy the best of them to DVD. If you buy gay classics on DVD there are often complete scenes missing or cuts made to keep to a certain running time. Some gay classics are butchered in the editing department and bear no resemblance to the original VHS film as released. This isn't the case with famous films, it's often films that aren't expected to make much money and never made much impact when first released.

My copies of old VHS films are stored on a separate hard drive so that i can share the original, un edited contents with whoever wants them. I'm not only keeping an archive of original gay porn...i'm keeping a visual record of my own history.

I've found you can't even give VHS tapes away these days, nobody seems to want them. As others have said copy the best to DVD's.

I still use VHS tapes for everyday use. It still works and I have 2 working machines and stacks of old movies plus a few old porn videos which I kept the best of. The rest I wiped if the tapes were still usable for other things.

I don't chuck out for the sake of it just to get the latest gadgets , I have a DVD player but not recorder and don't need one. I can timeshift programmes just as easily on tape if I really want to, not to mention I have no desire to plough through my 100s of tapes to preserve the bits I want, which I'll probably never watch again anyway , but I'm a hopeless hoarder :p

Well Perramb, there is another option. A friend bought all the video tapes from a big sex shop (mainly gay material) that made bankrupt. Now he owns thousands of tapes, all stored in his barn and one complete bedroom. Actually he never really looks at one of them (and that for more than 10 years). In his mind he is like an oil baron, who possesses a big oil well. It makes him feel happy. And feeling that's what matters.

There should be some sort of time capsule, not to be opened for 300 years, where a future generation would be able to access them. Since we are the first generation to have access to mass pornography, future people would value what we have, if only to pity us for our comparative lack of choice.

What has happened to super-8 tapes which were the predecessors to video? In a few years they will be really rare and costly; over the last 30 years they have gone, almost without exception, to the dustbin. The will the the fate of videos. In 10 years time, it will be the fate of DVDs

transfer them to either your hard drive or dvd and then sell them on ebay.

Super 8 was film . It's now almost impossible to buy I think. I used to know some who preferred it to video and stuck with it because of the better quality.

Super 8 and home versions of 16 mm WERE better in resolution and colour rendition that video of that day, if properly processed. These days a decent HD handicam can whip the ass out of anything but a very top level pro motion picture camera; and of course video is instantly editable and distributed via the internet. JVC (just one example) has stuff that TV producers are using to get otherwise impossible shots with larger camera outfits. Even Hollywood craft unions now have specific job titled positions for videographers.

If you're looking to just clear out, eBay is a decent way to go. I grouped 3, 4 VHS together in lots, auctioned them for 10 bucks, and most are gone. Right now, they've got a special with listing auctions at any price, and adding "Buy It Now" for free (normally, these upgrades will cost an extra fee), lasting until the end of this month.

But how do you search for them on e-bay?

Ebay used to have an 'adults only' section. Not sure if it still does. It was hard to find and you had to jump through some hoops and verify your age to find it. I once belonged but lost interest. As I recall if you poked around in the ebay index, you'd eventually find it.

EDIT: Ok I found it, the 'adult section' is still there. Its under Categories>Everything Else> Adult Only...

Happy hunting!
