I am getting rid of my old videotapes, collected over the decades. Many are rare, from smaller studios, and I'm sure would be very desirable to someone. I hate to just throw them in the dumpster, but I can't figure out a way to sell/donate them safely. Any ideas?

What to do with old videotapes?

A difficult question, one I've never found a good answer to. When VHS was still current some porn shops would px tapes, that won't happen now. Charity shops can't even shift Disney tapes, they won't want hardcore porn. It is possible to sell this stuff on Craigslist but not for much. Buyers don't like giving out their home address to strangers for some reason, so you have to meet like drug dealers in a nominated carpark.
Recycling means separating the shell from the tape, not worth the time. Burning is very bad, the smoke contains dangerous polutants.
I am sorry to say that the trash can seems like the least worst option.

It's a very good question, but I don't know if I've got any plausible answers.
The only thing I could come up with right now is if you get in touch with the Gay Museum in Berlin, Germany, (in German: Schwules Museum) and ask them if they would be interested to get your collection, or at least give you an answer to what you could do.

It is a problem, not least because some or indeed most of the videos - and porn stars - of yesteryear can often be hotter that what we get today! It would take loads of 'real time' to copy the best of them onto DVD and then upload them onto one of the many free porn sites which have "Vintage" or "Classic" or "Retro" in their categories sections. At least they'd be out there but I guess you'd have to find out first which titles have already made it onto one of these sites, so as not to spend time on unnecessary duplication. I doubt if there's a "porn archive" anywhere for these old video tapes, so sadly it does look like they'd have to be dumped at some point. All rather a shame but there it is.

I totally agree that some of the older porn is sometimes hotter then the new ones. It's just I grew up with VHS. You might want to look at e-bay I think that they have a adult section you could list them on.(At least they used to) Also as mentioned I definitely would covert the good ones to DVD. I have done that.

One of our local gay bars will on occasion have a rummage sale to raise funds for charity and old porn magazines and tapes are often sold there. Perhaps there is a bar or gay group in your area that does the same and you could donate them.

It took a few years, but I recently finished copying all my old VHS porn to DVDs using a DVD/HDD recorder. No idea how I'll get rid of the tapes: nobody wants tapes anymore, even if you erase them to be re-used as blanks- VHS is deader than King Tut. Trashing them is difficult, but I guess I can hide two or three at a time mixed in with everyday garbage. Maybe I can find a disposal company to cart them away all at once.
My collection of 215 two-hour tapes dates from 1983 > 2003, and most were custom compilations of favorite scenes from the movies I rented from the various gay-oriented shops we once had in New York. Younger people may not remember, but before the explosion of free internet porn and limitless cheap hard drive storage, we had to RENT gay porn tapes, and copy our favorite scenes in real time using two VCRs. Each rental cost $5, and you were lucky if one scene in a typical 80-minute Falcon or Catalina or H.I.S. movie could get you off reliably. I was always shocked by the wealthy gays who just bought the tapes outright instead of renting and copying scenes: new-release porn tapes cost $40-$80 apiece, and were rarely worth that much!

I have a rather large collection of original VHS gay porn, and I just checked on Ebay and VHS recorder/players are very cheap on there.
Most of mine are in their original boxes and been well stored.
Is there an auction site like Ebay that they can be listed on for sale?
