After losing everything in the Great Recession, a woman embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad. [1mdb]
This won't be everyone's cup of tea! This is a very quiet movie with beautiful cinematography, and Frances’ subtle mannerisms are really enjoyable. 3rd Oscar?
Frances McDormand is definitely one of the very best actors in contemporary american cinema - the first movie I know i watched and noticed her part was the movie Fargo from 1996. :thumbs up:
Interesting post!!! Good thing that I studied German in secondary school und im Gymnasium, but I'll have to take it easy and watch parts of the video again & I've downloaded it from YouTube.
As I understand the situation, there are some serious conceptual problems about which I don't understand how the people behind the experiment will handle them:
1) Racism: there's a tendency to use racism as a synonym to ANY kind of discrimination and I don't think that that's a good thing. I think it's conceptually necessary to distinguish between DIFFERENT types of discrimination. If skin colour is taken as a dominant marker for "race", then it's impossible for anyone who isn't blind to see that a black guy "belongs to the negroid race" - you don't have to ask if this is the case, you see it immediately.
The case is - at least usually - the same concerning sex differences. Usually anyone who isn't blind will immediately see if a person is a man or a woman.
But when it comes to sexual identity, the situation is quite different. Since I've never had sex with any woman, I could call myself a total superhomo, but if I haven't told you that this is the case, you certainly cannot see with just your own eyes that this is the case.
So the logics of racial discrimination, sex discrimination and sexual identity discrimination functions in different ways.
2) Eye colour: it's impossible to use just two categories to talk about eye colour. All people haven't either Blue eyes OR Brown eyes - some people have Green eyes (which was the case with my own father), some have Grey eyes, some Brown eyes are so dark that they almost look Black - and what to do you do about albinism?
Well, I'll have to re-watch, but thanks a lot for this post!!!
So I thought I'd give this pile of poo another go and see if my opinion had changed but to be honest having sat through this god-awful opening of truly unbelievable plot it was almost enough to make me switch it off.
I haven't read the books so not sure how faithful to them this movie is but this opening Jeeezz. I mean well done Thomas for such a brilliant plan....
What incredible planning that the train carriages run to a stop EXACTLY where Newt and the others are .... and the Klingon war bird follows the dune buggy for several miles firing dozens of rockets at it but they manage to avoid being hit... and they land it JUST where Thomas planned ... and they send the stormtroopers out to stand EXACTLY where they have dug a perfectly square pit....and in any case if the kids were the most valuable asset to WCD why put them on a train, why not fly them and why was the Klingon war bird not flying above the train providing protection the whole time rather than being a few miles away etc etc etc and then there is the ridiculous events in the city, but hey enough, rant over....... (but it is utter utter rubbish!)
In the same vein, Lord Of The Rings..... why didn't Gandalf just ask the bloody eagles to fly Frodo and the damn ring to Mt Doom and we would have all saved hours and hours X_XX_XX_X
