Why do boys and men expose themselves?

This is not a complaint by any means, but why do boys and men love to show themselves in the world wide web. What is its counterpart in primitive societies? What did they do similar to this before web cameras. Does this trait result in any evolutionary advantage?

It probably does come from a primitive urge.

Certain tribal mating rituals I think were done by exposing the genitals and it's the male of most species who put on the best shows - like peacocks with their feathers.

"Exposing themselves" is the modern equivalent of writing anonymous notes on toilet walls. It's a means of release, doing something that they know their friends, family etc would consider naughty, in the knowledge that they are unlikely to be found out by said acquaintances.

It's also probably a means of attracting interest from those you wish to meet in the flesh and whose interests match yours. However the popularity of sites like X-Tube and dedicated fetish sites for underwear lovers and the like suggests it's primarily just a need to show themselves off to an audience who they know won't be offended - or if they are offended, there is bugger all they can do about it.

Maybe the issue is being too deeply analyzed and there's really not so much reason behind it nor just one. It's merely something some people enjoy doing that some don't and is enjoyed by some spectators while others are left offended; a description that could be applied to just about any action. As long as it's not forced in one's face and kept in an appropriate place, all is good.

I think it's being covered up all the time that needs explaining, not a desire to go back to our pre-cloths primal selves!

As for evolutionary advantages, what species does not display to get a mate? If you've got it, flaunt it, or no one will know you have it, and hence no one will have your babies!

Women and girls do this too. I don't think there is a primitive, ancient aspect to "exposing yourself," as what is new, what is modern is the idea of constantly wearing clothes, and attaching a heightened significance therefore to a natural and banal state of nudity.
