Why Is Porn With GENUINE Reactions Hard to Find?

It seems like every major porn company has productions where the stars overact every scene. They moan from barely being touched. They breath through their teeth every friggin second. It seems like they're being told to redo scenes but "louder." It takes me out of it, and it's annoying. It's such a turn off. I can never tell if they're genuinely having a good time or if they're forcing it. The European companies seem to be the worst offenders in my opinion. EVERY ACTOR purses his lips, breaths through his teeth and moans, regardless of what's happening to them.

I think H&lix and C0ckyb0ys do a good job (not to mention their actors are exactly my type... not quite twinks, but not overly built / perfect)... But even then, sometimes it's hard to tell whether they're acting or are actually enjoying what they're doing. I can never seem to find professional studios that are consistently putting out scenes where the actors are legitimately having a good time.

Who else shares this opinion? Where might I be able to find something with decent production value that also has dudes enjoying the sex?

Well, there are two different issues and skillsets here.

Most porn shoots set up an outline of what is going to happen. That lets the director know where to put the camera and what to light so you can see what is going on. It also gives the performer a blueprint. Now to make that look real, you need good actors. (Good luck finding them, although a few do exist.)

At the other end of the spectrum you have the wild and woolly guerrilla doentary shooting of Paul Morris and friends who just want to throw oversexed guys together and then film what happens. That can be hit or miss but Paul's directors and cameramen are aces at anticipating what is going on and getting their shots. And of course his editors make it all look like it happened in real time when they are actually pulling standard reality show editing tricks to take a reaction shot from one section and insert it into another to make it all seem to be happening at once.

But it all still comes down to acting - which is basically putting yourself in the moment and ignoring all the technical claptrap that is going on around you. Part of the difference in styles is that directors like Morris try to actively facilitate that environment (and then let the actor decide what specifically they want to do), while the more traditional approach is to tell the actor what they are going to do and then rely on them to provide the believability when the camera is rolling.

Both can feel real and believable when it all comes together.

I think this is a really good question. In my opinion it comes down to the fact that in the professional movies, they are being paid to act. So that is what they do...act!

Like Curiousnomore, it's one of the reasons that I prefer watching amateur vids more than I do the crisp studio videos. It is so much more fun to see genuine reactions instead of scripted ones.

I've sat in on a few porn shoots, both professional and amature, and the it can be wildly different affairs.

First: With the professional movies, you have to remember that these guys are out to make a buck. They have to pay the actors, the crew men, the editors, and all the people in the back like a normal production Hollywood movie. The last one that I was at about six months ago, it took a couple of hours to shoot a movie that after editing came out to be about 25 minutes. Again, like Hollywood, there was a lot of stopping, camera repositioning, get yourself hard again, and go back to sex for a few minutes until the director wants to move the equipment again. I won't lie, these guys can turn a two hour exhaustive sex session into a hot 25 video that will keep your hand on your dick the whole time, but it comes at a cost. These guys are trying to pull off real emotions of sex like a Hollywood actor is trying to pull off fear of just missing a car about to land on top of him. And the car isn't really there.

Amature sex on the other hand, like skntn said, the guys that I've done it with and have done the filming for a few times, knew each other beforehand, so there was already a natural chemistry between them. They knew what each other liked, and how to get them to react to something. For example, one of my buds that we have filmed a few times nearly melts when he gets his ass eaten. I think the thing with porn these days is that it has become a performance. It always has been but, these days we are more aware of the visual media and how films, TV shows and porn scenes are constructed. You are aware for example when a film or TV show is trying to manipulate your emotions or trying to take you in a particular direction. We are all more media savvy and not the passive, unquestioning audiences we once were. If you watch some of the TV shows or films from the fifties, sixties and seventies and ones from your childhood. There is stopping and starting which interferes with the flow. it is constructed and fake and we pick up on it. We are all more attuned to it. Once you know the magic trick the illusion is shattered. We can still get turned on if we find the participants attractive, but we are aware it is not real. Watching guys masturbate is a truer form of porn. Ok, they can ham it up sometimes, but underneath you can get an idea of the emotions their feeling and the responses their bodies go though. When you watch some of the Russians they always seem bored and despondent, yet when they approach orgasm you see micro expressions on their faces and involuntary body movements and even when the try to show indifference to the orgasm, you still get the momentary glazing of the eyes or the upward movement of the eyeballs. When it comes to non solo sex then it has to be amateur. A long term couple filming themselves with a hand held. Although, the trouble with amateur, as with professional, is people can become aware of the camera and either freeze up or like some of the professional over act. It is very hard to get a natural feel or capture someone's true emotion when a camera is involved. Actors often struggle with that and most of the time they have their clothes on.

A couple of Czech studios explained to me why there is such an emphasis on loud moaning in their scenes. The first problem is that many models don't speak English (or only with a horrible accent). Talking can make a scene more convincing. I'm not speaking about elaborate conversation but just adding 'Fuck, yeah" or 'Love your dick' etc. can make a huge difference to a scene. The Czech models could speak Czech but most studios don't like the hassle of translation. One studio also told me that American viewers are not so keen on subtitles (USA is the most important market for gay porn). So to compensate for the lack of talking the models just moan, and moan, and moan.

Another thing is that many gay porn models are reasonable silent while having sex (not so very different from most people!). So after the scene is filmed the moaning is recorded separatly and later added to the scene (sometimes another person is used for the moaning). This can be easily noticed as the moaning is out of synch with the models lips. But it is very difficult to moan in a natural way i.e. not too soft or too loud. Most of the time studios opt for the loud moaning as they think this will make a scene more convincing. For me this over the top moaning is just irritating and unnatural.


What also plays a role in the lack of genuine reactions in Czech gay porn is that the overwhelming majority of models is straight / gay for pay. Some studios do a reasonably good job in hiding this (B€l@mi) but most of the times it shows. Gay sex doesn't come naturally to a straight guy. You can teach a straight model a thing or two about gay sex but, as already mentioned above, some things cannot be teached and come from a natural desire.

Also, who doesn't like dirty talk? I think if Czech or Eastern-European guy talk dirty in broken English it makes it all the more exotic and kinky. Practically every S-€-V-P scene features this kind of dirty talk. All the guys use identical phrases which would have been easy for them to learn, such as a simple 'fuck me' or 'suck me'.

I agree that B-€-L-A-M-1 have the 'passion' down to a fine art. Not sure if it's all real, but very convincing. I agree here that 95% of their models are Str8. As B1ll H1gg1ns (director based in Prague) once said "if a guy is horny enough he will fuck dirt." Also recall an interview with the owner of B-€-L-A-M-1 where he states categorically that the vast majority of the guys are indeed str8. It's not so hard to imagine if you think about it. Imagine you as a gay man, 18 or 20yo, being paid to fuck gorgeous teenage women. Impossible? Of course not! Especially at that age when you are peaked ALL the time. And bending over so they can take turns fingering your ass or fucking you with say a dildo. What's so utterly 'unimaginable' about that? In the end it all comes down to acting skills.
Good actors don't overact, bad actors tend to do so.
Good actors don't do porn for many reasons, hence the overacting.
Don't think they cast them according to their acting skills... probably more on the size of their schlong or their overall physical fitness.
Plus I don't think porn movies, with their tiny budgets, attract all the best directors either... so it's a bunch of lousy actors with big dicks and sixpacks directed by wannabe directors that can't find work outside the small porn niche.
I also think the "quality porn" project simply imploded because of all the free porn you get on the internet.
