Hey Guys:

I could really use some help like...ASAP!!! I have a Windows 7 XP Home Edition Desktop PC...yeah..I know its hard to believe..but it was a gift from my late bf and I keep it for that reason only...the thing is this..I was asked to create a PowerPoint presentation and to add my voice to a .wav file and then insert that file into the PowerPoint presentation. I have a sound recorder on my PC and it stated that as long as I have speakers, I will not have the need for a microphone. However, I did recall several times seeing a MIC icon pop up at the bottom of my screen before. Nonetheless, this is my problem. I followed the directions to record my voice message but when I wanted to play it back, there was no sound. I am sure that I recorded the message because when I hit the play button, I did hear a sound at the end of the message. Therefore, I believe that this could be something simple that I'm missing. I would be very grateful if any of you smart, brilliant, computer guys could please, please, give me some awesome suggestions on how to get this done ASAP!!!...I thank you in advance for your cooperation...JW :duh:

To record your voice you will need a mic, speakers alone will not record. If you do have a mic plugged in you may need to adjust your mic settings in control panel to pick up sound.

I went into control panel on my PC and I saw an icon called "Sounds and Audio Devices". When I clicked the icon, there were tabs with the headings; Volume, Sounds, Audio, Voice and Hardware. I clicked on the Voice tab and it had Voice Playback and Voice Recording. I did not see anything for MIC settings yet. Do you by chance know where I would look to find the MIC settings?..Thanks

Hay I still play with Windows XP. Much prefer it. Dreading when I will be forced to use Windows 7 from March next year when Microsoft stop creating patches for XP :(

Try these steps out.

To set up a microphone
Microphones vary greatly in design and purpose. They will continue to develop and become more specialized. Consult the microphone manual for hardware and software specifics; however, most models install in a similar fashion.
1.
Locate the sound connections and connect the microphone jack to the computer. Most computers use an internal sound card and often the connections will be in the back of the system.
2.
These will be a series of connections the same size and diameter as the microphone jack. One will be labeled as the microphone connection, either with a small icon that looks like a microphone or explicitly labeled as such.
3.
Plug the microphone into that connection.
To test the connection:
1.
Open Speech in Control Panel.
2.
Select the Speech Recognition tab.
3.
Speak directly into the microphone. The sound level should register in the Microphone Level indicator

Thanks so much Perrymason:

I did find out last night that I will have to buy a computer microphone and unfortunately, the computer store near me did not have what I was looking for and therefore, I had to order online from their website and now, I have to wait a few days for it to come...but I thank you for this post because it will be very helpful when I get it...JW:thumbs up:
