To say Hello and Goodbye is just the normal way of behavior and of course a question of being polite.

Well, that's the way one should act because I treat somebody like I want to be treated.

I think that became a big problem in general life didn't it?

Definitely say goodbye, even if we're pissed at each other. To me it's an acknowledgement of the other person's humanity.

Every time somebody walks out of somebody's house or hangs up a phone without saying goodbye on TV or a movie, it bugs the hell out of me. Usually I yell "OK, see ya later!" at the TV (not so much in a movie theater).

My English isn't good enough to be sure about it, but I thought that goodbye means God be with you and is used as au revoir in French. The intention is that we see each other again. This in contrast to adieu (I will recommend you to God) or farewell (things may go good?). In this case we expect to see each other never again.
So when you leave silently it gives more hope than adieu or farewell.

Better say good bye. But if you're pretty you even could say "see ya!" :)

I don't know whether etilit was being that specific in his question, but my answer was based on a broader and more generic meaning for "goodbye". I think most English-speaking people don't make much of a distinction between the various words or phrases; at least that's true for me, they are pretty much interchangeable.

English doesn't have quite the same meaning as "Hasta La Vista" or similar, "goodbye" is simply goodbye and that's it. It's quite final whether you intend to see anybody again or not.

"God be with you" is the original meaning of "goodbye", but it does not really have that nuances of meaning anymore. People use it to mean "Until next time" (like "au revoir"), and also to mean "We probably won't meet again, so have a good life" (like "adieu"). Sometimes it's also a euphemism for "I hope we don't meet again", but of course that depends on context.
