I drink about 12-15 beers a week with wine on the side. I do not have any problems resulted by it with my family, work and finances except my physical health the next day. I guess you would be alcoholic if the urges of drinking is stronger than your urge to enjoy the present and see the people around you as amazing as they are. If you think alcohol is the replacement to escape, then it's a serious addiction.
I'm not a big drinker, but my Dad and, in fact, most of my male relatives, used to drink daily. He drank a minimum of 3-4 beers every day and often had shots of whiskey with them. Yet he never had a problem with it, and I can count on one hand the number of times I saw him very tipsy (never roaring drunk).
I'm not that familiar with the medical/scientific aspects of alcoholism, but from my life experiences I know that some people are far more susceptible to alcoholism (the physical addiction) than others, but even if you're not, you can still become an alcoholic if you let it get ahead of you. It's a question of how important it becomes in your life, and I agree those questions and others should be paid attention to.
