I live a few blocks away from the theater. I almost went to the showing of Dark Night but changed my mind so I could see something on Monday instead. I'm still in a little shock.

OMG Josh, that might've been the luckiest decision you ever made! I'm glad you're OK, but really sad for all those other people. Will be watching the news today & tonight.

The FBI has reported that the shooters apartment is booby trapped with explosive devices and they are working to get into that home but it could take days to disarm the device.

Well I'm very glad you changed your mind Josh, although it's a terrible and unnecessary tragedy for others. The world is full of nutters , but it always hits home when it's something that happens close by.

I heard some of the eye witness accounts on the news this afternoon, one girl hid behind the seat as the man walked past!

Tragedy. Maybe US alredy should think about tightening "guns law".

Jeebus - a close escape Josh - glad you're OK.

The gun violence in the US makes me so sad. WHY, after all these tragedies, can there not even be a debate on guns without the NRA roaring and screaming like it's the end of the world?

There is a massive chasm between where things are now, and all guns becoming illegal. Surely there are some sensible things that could be done to make people safer without ending the second amendment? How about closing the loop holes around gun shows and putting the large capacity magazine ban that used to exist back in place for starters?

:(

Sensible? In my lifetime we have had a president shot to death, his brother shot to death while running for president, Dr King shot to death, another president (Reagan) shot, congresswoman Gabby Giffords shot in the head, and many regular people killed. It doesn't seem to matter.

That said...you folks from other countries must assume we live like the old cowboy movies. Most of the country isn't like that. I live in the east, and only cops and some criminals carry guns, and some rural people who hunt. I've never seen a gun, except in a cop's holster, and at a shooting range.

Thanks for not getting killed, Josh. We'd really miss you.

I WOULD NOT POST THIS IF I FELT IT WASN'T NECESSARY!

The Westboro Baptist Church has reported that they will be down at the Aurora Colorado Memorial tonight at 6:30 in full force to picket the service.

"
Thank God, God sent the Shooter!

He is a born and bred Doomed american. A product of a cursed generation that has forgotten God.
When a foolish city and nation will get their have-candle-will-travel on, the servants of God will make sure that you understand that you are glorying in your shame! This nation should shut your mouths and get down on your knees and beg God for forgiveness and begin to mourn for your sins!
Worse and more is on the way! WHY you ask?! See the link above, it says the words better than I could write them here!
Thank God, God sent the Shooter!!"

I am disgusted and ashamed that they would do something like this!

What some wouldn't do to take advantage of such a tragedy! It's obvious that they feel no shame.

On a different note, I'm glad you didn't go. It's things like this that make you realise how fragile life really is.

I'm entertined more and more with every another action of WBC or similar idiots. Who can take them seriously? Ultimately, they inadvertently work for us. Cos they are nice example that most pervert and twisted people are religious fanatics.

Indeed - very few things could unite the extreme left and extreme right, but disgust at the WBC is one of those things. The moment the picketed military funerals with their hate speech, they became a force FOR gay rights.

If there is an afterlife were we have to atone for all the hurt we cause others in this life, the WBC will be atoning for a very very very long time.

Charlie Brooker is great and that is so true!!

He's not the first to be satirical about news , and it's not done to tell a story anymore, it's done to make a bigger drama out of a crisis for effect for ratings.

Even the BBC do it, and there are very few news programmes that are objective and informative rather than pandering to the worst tastes.

New is a not about education any more :(

Networks used to treat the news as a public service, but the Rupert Murdocs of the world have turned it into a for-profit entertainment show, and we're all suffering because of that.

THAT KID WAS JUST NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's the one bit EVERYONE agrees on. It doesn't really mean we agree on anything else though.

His whole arsenal of guns and bullets was legal. Is that OK? Should it be possible to order that many bullets with the click of a mouse?

If he was so nuts, why did he fall through the cracks and go un-diagnosed and un-treated?

Are there lessons here for the healthcare system, particuarly when it comes to mental health care? Are there lessons here for updating the legislation around guns?

So he was nuts, does that mean we should just move on and change nothing? The guy in Columbine were nuts too. Most (if not all) of the people who get up to shit like this are nuts. That doesn't mean the status-quo is OK.

The mental health issue is a difficult one. With a teenager (like at Columbine), there are teachers and parents with the responsibility to interact with and assess their kids. ( I don't know why it failed in that case).
With this guy, there seemed to be no obvious signs. He was smart and a loner, but that's about it. He was an adult, so nobody was responsible for him.

It's not about someone being responsible for adults. You make it sound like I'm advocating for the nanny state, I most certainly am not!

What I'm arguing for is that there should be facilities for anyone who feels they need it to get help, early, without stigma or difficulty, and regardless of wealth. It should be possible for anyone who is suffering mental illness to get themselves help before things get out of hand.

I credit the free counselling service in my university with saving my life. I didn't need anyone to spot warning signs - what I needed was somewhere to go for help when I was cracking up. I was able to get myself that help in confidence, and without financial penalty. I was suicidal, I was getting paranoid, and I badly needed help. I can't imagine what would have happened had I not had a mental health safety net to catch me in my time of need.

In short, I want everyone to have the opportunity to get the help they need when they need it. The sad reality is that many people can't get that help - particularly in the USA, where treating the sick is a for-profit business, not a social service.
