so for those of you who are older what did you do for porn before the internet? I'm guessing place like Calf. had gay mag. and videos. but what about small places. I live in Ala. there was probably nothing gay for miles

There was one decent gay porn shop in Boston, in the south end. That was Boston's gayborhood. I would occasionally buy a Falcon video. But not often. They were expensive.

That shop is long gone, and the south end is much less about gay, and much more about $$$.

In the 70's, I was loaned a VHS tape that was a copy of a copy of a copy, etc. The quality was total crap due to resolution degradation along the way.
In recent times I found a digital copy of the same movie, that I can't even remember the name of now, and I was amazed how it seemed to "ring my bell" at that time, yet didn't now.
There was also the occasional Playgirl magazine with their nude male lift outs in the middle. Those I still have to this day !
Whoever would have thought of the standards all the media is today in comparison.

I came of age while the internet was already established and my family always had an updated computer from 1999 to present so porn was easy to come by lol (especially once we went from dial-up to high speed). There were a couple of shops that had a limited selection of adult magazines both straight and gay, titles like Blueboy, Inches and Honcho near where I lived. You could thumb through them and see the big dicks on all those boys from California. Hell, once I cam across a picture set of my step brother who had relocated out to San Francisco. He was impressively endowed.

There were also a couple of adult "bookstores" that had super eight films that you could play for $.25 for a few minutes. Some of the bookstores had glory holes, some did not. Somewhat sleazy places, but for a confused teenager trying to figure out my sexuality, they were better than nothing.

I had an older friend that worked for an airline and traveled the world often having layovers of several days. He traveled with a portable dual deck VCR and would spend his down time renting and dubbing porn tapes from around the world. Then he'd loan me copies to dub myself. I still have two video cabinets full of hundreds of porn tapes.

Other than that, the local porn shop was well stocked with gay magazines. Being a mob run business, there were some "shady" deals offered. Like with old unsold magazines, they'd cut off the "header" from the front page with the date and title and send them back to the publisher for credit. Then they'd take these magazines with the headers removed and package 4 or 5 together and sell them in a grab bag for $4.99. Which was a Hell of a deal since they usually cost like $14.99 each...

Whenever I would go to the store, I would sneak over to the magazine section while my mother was shopping and I would look at all the exercise magazines. The guys on the cover were awesome. If I saw a "teen girl" magazine that I figured had a shirtless guy in it, I would look at those as well.
By the time I was 12-13 years old, the internet was still in its early stages. Barely any search engines, and Google was barely a thing. My family didn't have the internet, but I would get someone to drive me over to the local college and either go into their library or their computer lab. There was always at least one or two computers set up where no one could see the screen. I grab that one and then I'd take out a floppy disk, insert it, and use it to save pictures and short clips to take home and watch at night.
When I got old enough to drive, the only internet my parents would pop for was a 56k line (and not a second line), so I had to be careful about using the internet too much. So I would go to the nearby video rental store and rent any R-rated video that I was certain showed a guy in his underwear. The x-rated section intimidated me too much to actually go in there lol.

It's true that Denmark was the first of all countries to fully abolish its obscenity laws and decriminalize porn - first in textmedia (books, journals, magazines etc) in 1967 and porn in visual media in 1969; Sweden was to follow suite and abolish its obscenity law in 1971.

So was Shelter's dad mistaken that he had bought some straight porn mags in 1966? Maybe, maybe not - remember what is legal doesn't necessarily reflect what you can buy, let's say in Copenhagen's famous/infamous red light district Nyhavn.

But there's also some other important cirstance pointing towards Shelter's dad probably remember correctly. A recent PhD Thesis in economic history about the commercial breakthrough of the pornographic press in Sweden 1950-1980 clearly shows, that since "everybody" in the second half of the 1960s knew, that the obscenity laws soon (= in a couple of years) would get abolished, the porn publishers were preparing for the big boom to come and started a large number of porn mags in 1967-1970 though formally it all still was illegal. This was the Swedish case, but I'm pretty certain something of the same kind was happening in Denmark, but a couple of years earlier - porn publishers weren't passively waiting for their fare to get legal, they were very actively preparing for the new situation.

And concerning dargelos comment that Shelter must be mistaken on the West-German situation in the 1960s I beg to differ - Shelter is right about the illegality of porn in West-Germany in the 1960s.

Being able to buy lots of things- illegal - on Reperbahn,Hamburg, is quite another thing

I don't know if my dad remembered correctly. He was speaking from 1966. And I don't know it better, because to that time I was waiting on a big lily pad that some sperm eventually would find me. But if it really was 1966 I have had to wait for another 21 years. -
