Fireworks shows are held for entertainment, to celebrate the start of a new year for example.
In the eastern part of The Netherlands it has a different meaning. By making noise we try to scare away the evil spirits.
To make big noise we use carbide. I did it as a kid in the early fifties; my father did it as a kid in the early twenties and probably his father did it in the century before. And my boys had their fun making big bangs this year.
In the countryside they used old fashioned milk barrels.
