Like People in History

In a book that could have been written only by one who lived it and survived to tell, Picano weaves a powerful saga of four decades in the lives of two men and their lovers, relatives, friends, and enemies. Tragic, comic, sexy, and romantic, filled with varied and colorful characters, Like People in History is both extraordinarily moving and supremely entertaining.

Solid, cautious Roger Sansarc and flamboyant, mercurial Alistair Dodge are second cousins who become lifelong friends when they first meet as nine-year-old boys in 1954. Their lives constantly intersect at crucial moments in their personal histories as each discovers his own unique - and uniquely gay - identity. Through the lens of their complex, tumultuous, madcap, yet enduring relationship - and their involvement with the handsome model, poet, and decorated Vietnam vet Matt Loguidice, whom they both love - Picano chronicles and celebrates gay life and subculture over the last half of the twentieth century: from the legendary 1969 gathering at Woodstock to the legendary parties at Fire Island Pines in the 1970s, from Malibu Beach in its palmiest surfer days to San Francisco during its gayest era, from the cities and jungles of South Vietnam during the war to Manhattan's Greenwich Village and Upper East Side during the present-day AIDS war.

The Last Herlad Mage trilogy - Mercedes Lackey

Vanyel's disdain for swordsmanship earns him an unexpected exile--at the High Court of Valdemar under the guardianship of his stern and implacable Aunt Savil, one of the legendary Herald-Mages. A young man's painful discovery of his own immense talents and his true nature form the core of this richly detailed fantasy, the first in a new series set in the same world as "The Heroes of Valdemar.'' Lackey's talent for characterization lends depth to this coming-of-age adventure that will appeal to most fantasy readers.

OOH NOOO HUN!!!! LOL ARGGHHH I WISH I CAN TURN BACK TIME AND MAKE YOU READ THE BOOK FIRST!!X( I am sorry but I do not think the movie had done justice to the book.. okay fair enough the movie had fared well.. but the book after reading it first and then watching the movie was nothing in comparison!! I am very very much in love with the book and knowing the fact that I have read the book and watched the movie I had chosen the book over the movie.. Just like harry potter books and movies.. the movies are based towards viewers and not necessarily those who had actually read the book which is full of little details!! Read the book slimmy its wonderful!! :x:x If I can send you my book I would so you can read my own copy <3.. and well if I didn't lend it to a friend who has YET to return it.. I would ;)

I am nearing life of pi by the way~! :) Its a good book a slight difficult text to read.. had me confused some of the time reading it so I would turn the pages back and fourth but I love the protagonist in the book he's so uplifting! :D I can send you my copy if you'd like xD tee hee then you can read my own personal copy :D

A Long Way Gone. by Ismeal Beah.

A must read. A true story.
A story about a 12 year old boy fleeing attacking rebels in Sierra Leone
At 13 he becomes a soldier for the government. After witnessing so many atrocities, he finds himself now able to commit them himself.
It is absolutely unbelievable what the people of Sierra Leone have went through, and more miraculous that many survived.

Hey Tom,

Sounds like a great book. I will definitely consider after I read book of negroes, I have been reading a lot of fictional books that seem slightly more like it would be non fictional.. but I am gonna try a different genre and try non fictional books and read the experiences either good or bad that people have endured.. I remember being really addicted to chicken soup for the soul when I was younger because they were based on a real life stories :)

I think it was him I heard interviewed on the radio, maybe a couple of years back, telling some of his story... heartwrenching as I recall

Another unbelievable story of survival is "We Die Alone"
Story of Jan Baalsrud.
A Norwegian Commando who went back to Nazi occupied Norway to help sabotage the Nazis.
He was severely frostbitten and blinded by snow as he tried to stay ahead of the Nazis.

Amazon.co.uk Review

Comedians rarely make great fiction writers, the temptation to throw in cheap one-liners distracting them from any substantial narrative--which is why Alexei Sayle's first attempt at proper literature is a nice surprise. Although riddled with dark humour, his short story collection Barcelona Plates is actually best when he's being serious. Sayle has a knack for story-telling and a twisted imagination which creates perverse characters. They're mostly melancholic beings whose lives are in a rut when the smallest twist of fate changes everything--from the call centre employee who spills cream on her suit to the business woman who loses her keys. Especially good is "The Minister For Death", in which a retired pipe fitter from Liverpool discovers, after an incident returning from the chip shop with a steak pie, that old people are invisible in modern society and gains retribution as the "stealth codger".
After 17 years in London, Sayle's representation of his adopted city is powerful--from a nature reserve in Kings Cross to likely lads down Bermondsey, from wealthy Islington squares to Clerkenwell on a Saturday night. He eruditely describes the early evening Soho populace as, "Clerks in raincoats clutching beer bottles by the neck, standing outside bars looking up and down the street as if good times were about to arrive in a taxi." Barcelona Plates is side-tracked from time to time by rants, such as Disneyland's rancid evil or the "stupidity" of recent comedy, mirroring Sayle's sardonic demeanour and acerbic monologues on TV. However overall, it's an entertaining collection of absurd yarns

The most outrageously funny book about sex yet written
- Guardian

Philip Roth's gift for fantasy, his superb dialogue, his ability to evoke places and atmospheres, makes Portnoy's Complaint at once hilariously, scandalously funny and deeply moving
- Philip French, Financial Times

Alexander Portnoy is a great comic character. He is going to be for many readers what his mother was for him: The Most Unforgettable Character I've Met
- Julian Mitchell, New Statesman

A hysterically funny monologue which has already added a new prototype to American literature-Anyone who can recall anything of the awesome mystery and humiliating farce of growing up will find this book compulsive reading. And it is blessedly, extremely funny
- Tony Tanner, Spectator

This is the book that I will be reading next:

Dance with the Devil : A Memoir of Murder and Loss

I am nearly done Books of Negroes and needed a new book, someone who had posted a video clip in the "good movies" section called "dear zachary" by defianced0 had gotten me to remember that I had wanted to read a book based on this movie called dance with the devil by David Bagby the father of the gentleman who had been murdered at the park by his ex wife who he had a child with in the middle of the night and.. if you think i've spoiled the ending for everyone.. THINK AGAIN! Another unexpected event is to happen that no one had expected! I am deeply saddened by the fact that something this tragic can be done by one person... she is a monster and deserves to be locked up in jail for she has done to them.

When Miss Hazelstone of Jacaranda Park kills her Zulu cook in a sensational crime passionel, the gallant members of the South African police force are soon upon the scene: Kommandant van Heerden, whose secret longing for the heart of an English gentleman leads to the most memorbale transplant operation yet recorded; Luitenant Vekramp of the Security Branch, ever active in the pursuit of Communist cells; Konstable Els, with his propensity for shooting first and not thinking later and also for forcing himself upon African women in a manner legally reserved for male members of their race. In the course of the strange events which follow, we encounter some very esoteric perversions when the Kommandant is held captive in Miss Hazelstone's remarkable rubber room; and some even more amazing perversions of justice when Miss Hazelstone's brother, the Bishop of Barotseland, is sentenced to be hanged on the ancient gallows in the local prison.

I can't think why Tom Sharpe was deported from SA ... hilarious - enjoy!!
