Not yet.. I've now got copies of Kitchen Confidential and Life of Pi... but currently working through the Philip Pullman trilogy - His Dark Materials .. and as I'm back at work it all could take some time!!... and I really want to re-read Rohinton Mistry's excellent "A Fine Balance" ( see post # 6 in this thread)

If you enjoyed Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential, or if you’ve ever been a waitress, you’ll love this

'The front-of-house version of Kitchen Confidential. You will never look at your waiter the same way again'

'A hugely enjoyable book'

Product Description

Most restaurant customers are nice people, but a few are socially maladjusted psychopaths who relish giving their waiters a hard time. WAITER RANT gives the inside scoop on what really goes on behind the scenes in a restaurant, how to be a good customer and get great service and why, strangely, a waiter's lifestyle is as addictive as crack cocaine.

After training as a priest, working in psychiatric hospitals and nearly having a nervous breakdown by the age of thirty, the Waiter began serving tables. Seven years later . . . he's still figuring out what to do when he grows up, but has survived enough hellish shifts on the restaurant floor, smiling whilst holding burning hot plates and still smiling whilst a customer changes her order for the seventh time, to know a thing or two.

His outrageous anecdotes of appalling customer behaviour show that people are at their worst when being served. Bad customers get bad service. So if you don't want your waiter to spit in your food, or give you the table next to the toilets on Valentine's Day, the Waiter suggests you follow a few customer rules.

After a rocky childhood as a result of World War II, Jonathan Noel had a good two decades of plain existence. He has been renting a room for that time and even though he does not even have a private bathroom he has decided to buy it. He works as doorman at a bank and day after day he follows the exact same schedule. But now that he is in his fifties, things are about to change.

One Friday morning in the month of August 1984, while he was on his way to the bathroom, Jonathan sees a pigeon outside the door of his room and goes into panic. He is afraid that pigeons will overtake the apartment and he does not dare kill it. The pigeon causes a revolution in the main character's life that is baffling, but the metaphor is hard to miss. Jonathan embarks in a series of crazy plans to evade the object that causes his strain, going as far as moving into a hotel, even though he cannot afford it. Once more Suskind shows his ability for delving into the psyche of his characters and providing his readers with awesome insight. When we add to this author's writing ability to the mix, the result is more than satisfactory. For those that have not read Suskind before, this is a good a place to start as any, and of course, make sure to not disregard his masterpiece "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer".

lol damn it, i wish i enjoy reading e-books cuz theyre cheaper. But I only enjoy and love reading books with ink on paper. The smell of papers. hmmmm. nerdy alert haha :p.

Any books by Mark A. Roeder is good.
And if you're into good gay romance, paranormal gay love with, of course, erotic scenes, you should check out Samhain Publishing (Google their website. The paperback edition costs like 12 bucks but the e-book form is just 3 bucks. Ugh). A few great authors in this field, apparently most are females, are J. L. Langley, Ally Blue, Joey Skye, K. A Mitchell.

Cheers xx

"I had been making the rounds of the Sacrifice Poles the day we heard my brother had escaped."

So begins Iain Banks's remarkable The Wasp Factory. The action of the book occurs entirely in one small island and a neighboring town, but while the setting may be prosaic, the main character is not. Frank is a strange, sadistic, messed-up kid ("the Sacrifice Poles" are not metaphorical items) but, by telling the story through Frank's point of view, Banks lets us understand what inspires Frank, what frightens him, what moves him. It is remarkable how plausible Frank seems, even though his external actions are repugnant and his inner motivations are alien (far more alien than the "real" aliens of Banks's sci-fi novels). Indeed, the joy of reading this book lies in gradually gaining sympathy for a young man who has already murdered three family members and who tortures wasps in order to predict the future.
The action, despite its paucity, isn't half bad either.
Be forewarned, gentle reader: the book is extremely and dispassionately violent. Fortunately, Frank does not revel in death (for the most part); instead, he sees it merely as a natural phase of life, or, at best, a tool he can use in his own quasi-religious rituals. The book is disturbing less for its graphic descriptions than for its ability to make you care, just a little bit, for a sociopath

I've read almost all of David Searis's books. I usually only like scary or funny books. I am about to purchase his last book in another week or so.

The latest from a favourite author

Description

The senior pupils of St Peter's High School are on retreat to a secluded outdoor activity centre, coming to terms with the murder of a fellow pupil through the means you would expect: counselling, contemplation, candid discussion and even prayer - not to mention booze, drugs, clandestine liaisons and as much partying as they can get away with. Not so far away, the commanders of a top-secret military experiment, long-since spiralled out of control, fear they may have literally unleashed the forces of Hell. Two very different worlds are on a collision course, and will clash in an earthly battle between science and the supernatural, philosophy and faith, civilisation and savagery. The bookies are offering evens.

What are you reading?

What books are you currently reading? I figure we have to have a decent amount of readers here for a topic aboot it.

I'm currently reading Neuromancer and drooling over the thought of Hayden Christensen playing Case b/c guess what? sex scene... but so far no gay ones, I'll keep my fingers crossed, lol.
