I suppose many younger people here will say WHO? but this is a loss of someone who many grew up almost knowing him as a father figure and music industry icon. RIP Richard, you were loved by countless millions!

"Born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., on Nov. 30, 1929, Richard Wagstaff Clark began his lifelong career in show business began before he was even out of high school. He started working in the mailroom of WRUN, a radio station in upstate New York run by his father and uncle. It wasn't long before the teenager was on the air, filling in for the weatherman and the announcer.

Clark pursued his passion at Syracuse University, working as a disc jockey at the student-run radio station while studying for his degree in business. After graduating in 1951, Clark went back to his family's radio station, but within a year, a bigger city and bigger shows were calling.

Clark landed a gig as a DJ at WFIL in Philadelphia in 1952, spinning records for a show he called "Dick Clark's Caravan of Music." There he broke into the big time, hosting Bandstand, an afternoon dance show for teenagers.

Within five years, the whole country was watching. ABC took the show national, and "American Bandstand" was born."

A legend! Being a lover of American music, from the 40s through to the early 60s, people like Dick Clark were important in getting the music heard, and although I only ever saw the show in snippets much later on he is an important part of that whole rock & roll history!

exactly right - a pivotal figure in Rock and Roll history! A pioneer and steward...stuck around a little too long because he was a bit of a joke the last few years with his medical condition and Seascrest tried to steal his bit late but his place in music history IS secure. RIP for the BandStandC:C

It's always sad when an icon dies. But it was his time. Dick Clark, the eternal young man, became an old man who had a stroke. He battled on the best he could...but those battles always end.
If there's an afterlife, lets hope his is full of the happy pop music he gave us.

Dick Clark was so full of himself. He really thought that he was something selling records for corporate America. Trying to tell everybody what was hot and what was not. Music today would be so mutch better if American Bandstand never exsisted. He stayed so young looking because he never hit a hard days work in his life.

Sorry he died but he sucked.

You are so fucking wrong!

What Dick Clark did was present modern music to the older generation in a way that was non-threatening at a time when everyone over thirty thought that Rock music (and R&B) was a sign of the coming Apocalypse. In a time when racial tensions were at their highest, he helped unite the youth of America through music. Without him, groups like the Beatles, Buddy Holly, The Doors, Roy Orbison, The Who, The Band, James Brown, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fleetwood Mac, etc. would never have existed.

He is also responsible for many of the syndicated radio shows that are on the air now, like "Nights With Alice Cooper".

As for him never working a day in his life...
While he may have never done much manual labor, he had one of the most exhausting schedules in entertainment history, at one time starring in shows on all three national networks (NBC, ABC, & CBS)

If your looking for someone to blame for the shit that passes for today's music, start with all the rappers that think they're producers, Youtube, and Simon Cowell...
