For the world you are somebody or other, but for somebody or other you are the world!

~Erich Fried (1921-1988 Austrian poet)

This is my most beloved quote. I have printed and framed it for my BF as a birthday present.

It would probably be Plato who said;

We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark,
The real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.

Hi Dargelos I have read your posts in the "Scot-Thread" and I have found in your words there a specific sadness and anger.

So I think this quote will apply very good to the current situation in your homecountry. I'll hope that the UK will be after Friday always THE UK

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Even a disappointment, if it will be only rigorous and permanent, means a step forwards.
Auch eine Enttäuschung, wenn sie nur gründlich und endgültig ist, bedeutet einen Schritt vorwärts.

"Go along to get along" - My father ;) (he often said that whenever my mother would have him helping around the house while he would rather be working outside... it was his way of keeping us from complaining about chores when he wasn't around - his words still ring in my ears when it's time to do chores)

What does "go along to get along" mean? Is it bad or good for someone to go along to get along? In other words, is this phrase used to show approval or disapproval?

It means to agree with others or do what they want in order to preserve harmony. I suppose it could be a good thing or a bad thing. Some people may think it has the connotation of not standing up for one's principles just to avoid confrontation.

"Go along with" is an idiom that means acquiesce. It does not necessarily imply agreement, just no active disagreement.

"Get along" is another idiom. In the sentence "Sue gets along with everyone" it means that Sue does not have quarrels or differences of opinion with anyone; she has a pleasant relationship with everyone.

Although our culture promotes individuality there are situations in which it is essential to behave according to specific rules. My father, who served in the U.S. Navy during WW II, told us that the phrase "go along to get along" was often repeated in training to ensure harmony among men from such varied backgrounds.

Go along to get along is an interesting one. If the police stop your car at midnight you smile and say yes officer whatever, thats a good time to go along to get along. If a shop sells you shoddy goods you dont go along, you demand a refund. There's a right time and a wrong time.

Sniffit you are a very clever observer - the same I've observed with my father. My mom too is a very strong personality and she said her motto to my Dad: "You can prescribe if China will be a member of the UN and I prescribe what happens in my house!" Wham! And so it was and so it is until today! X_X :thumbs up: :rofl:
